Check out the Windward Alumni Spotlight Series on our founder, Mina Karsevar. Thanks Windward School Alumni and congrats Mina!
In 10th grade, as a Personal Project at the Dwight School, I started a nonprofit called . Edukate’s aim is to positively impact students’ academic trajectory and help set them up for success in high school, college, and beyond through testing, tutoring, and academic scholarships.
I wanted to help middle school students who were struggling with dyslexia gain access to resources, much like I had at Windward, that would help them meet their academic potential and get the best possible education.
The Windward process provided much of the background for Edukate – being properly diagnosed, having an IEP number, and making the move from a specialized education school into a mainstream school. With this knowledge, tons of research, and some help from others, I was able to create a business plan and website to form a nonprofit.
Being at Windward was a great experience. It was a place where I was able to learn in a way that made sense to me and everyone was going through the same struggles. Windward has taught me how to enjoy learning, advocate for myself in and out of school, and be confident with my work.
Being a Windward alum means staying connected to an amazing community. I hope that my experiences will help me to be a mentor to other students who have a language-based learning disability.
