Someone earning minimum wage in Nevada, working full-time (35 hours per week) each week for a year would earn $15,015 annually. As a country, we must do better so that low-income families do not have to choose between rent, food, and childcare.

Kennedy made rural poverty a focus of his presidential campaign. This year’s candidates could do the same—this time, in the Black Belt region.

Ahead of the nominating contests in Nevada and South Carolina, we're shedding light on a number of statistics showing that in both states, poverty and hunger are rampant and economic opportunity is declining. In the '16 NV Democratic Caucuses, 23% of voters had household incomes below $30,000 per year, and 47% had incomes below $50,000 per year. In the '16 SC Democratic Primary, 33% of voters had household incomes below $30,000/year, and 61% had incomes below $50,000/year.

Action for Opportunity Forum

In the primaries and general elections of 2008, 2012, and 2016, there were more than 50 presidential candidate debates. Yet not a single question on poverty, hunger, or homelessness was asked. The erosion of the middle class and steep decline of the American Dream is among the most important domestic challenges of our time and profoundly impacts other critical issues like health, education, racial inequity, economic competitiveness, and national security.

Prompting all candidates to concretely address these issues is critically important in the 2020 election cycle. The Action for Opportunity Forum is a high-profile, bi-partisan presidential forum that will allow candidates to address their specific plans for and records on poverty, hunger, homelessness, and economic opportunity.
