Our final trailblazer of the week (sorry for the late post) is Freddie Mercury. Mercury inspired millions around the world to embrace everything about them and embodied the idea of “Love is Love.” From extravagant performances reminiscent of Shakespeare plays to unmatched lyrical subtext, Mercury showed the world that if you believe in yourself enough, you can do anything.

This week’s second to last trailblazer is Alvin Ailey. Ailey, who grew up in a time plagued by constant violent racism and segregation, found dance as an escape from the world he lived in, and began experimenting with different dance forms. Breaking the stereotypes of dance and dancers with his dance program, Ailey is remembered for the way he inspired LGBTQ+ and black dancers to be free and to express themselves, and to use dance as an escape, just as he did.

Our 4th trailblazer of the week is the often overshadowed Sylvia Rivera. What little recognition drag queens get for their part in the gay rights movement often went to Marsha P Johnson - who, of course, was an incredible pioneer and a huge reason for the rights we enjoy today. However Sylvia Rivera played a massive role in the struggle for our rights as well. At the mere age of 17, she joined in - and led - the Stonewall Inn riots, and became an outspoken activist for LGBTQ+ rights but especially for the transgender community and drag queens. She started the STAR organization with Marsha P Johnson and her legacy is today continued by the Sylvia Rivera Law Project.

This week’s third trailblazer is Charles Henry Cochrane. A by-the-book and hardworking officer and a warm and friendly person made history by being the first ever NYPD police officer to come out as gay. Throughout the remainder of his career, Cochrane saw and experienced a lot of discrimination from his colleagues, but also found support amongst other officers. He was the leader of the Gay Officer Action League, and organization that persists to this day and continues to fight for the safety of LGBTQIA+ officers. Cochrane was never known for his outspokenness, but upon coming out, he became a strong LGBTQIA+ activist within the police force and never dropped his heartwarming smile.

Our second trailblazer of the week is often referred to as a prophet and a pioneer for the black community and the LGBTQ+ community: James Baldwin. James Baldwin’s many novels, poems, and articles often featured his idea of a “new Jerusalem” - a world in which human dignity prevailed over racial or sexual identity.

We/Us’s first trailblazer is Marsha P Johnson! Marsha was a self-identified drag queen and dedicated LGBTQ+ activist in a time where the community was the subject of a lot of apprehension. From being a prominent leader in the Stonewall Inn Riots to founding an organization that provided safety to LGBTQ+ youth, Marsha P Johnson was at the center of the fight for equal rights.

This Week’s Trailblazers
For our first week, we’re going to be celebrating 6 inspiring members of the LGBTQIA+ community who were, in many cases, some of the first to dream big and act big. Everyone featured this week broke down a significant professional barrier and marched along their own path. From activists like Sylvia Rivera & Marsha P Johnson to artists like Alvin Ailey & Freddie Mercury, our first 6 trailblazers were some of the first to say “I can”.

Hi everyone! Welcome (back) to the We/Us Project!
I created this project because I found that the trailblazers of our community don’t always get the recognition they deserve - and we, as a community, don’t always get the inspiration that we need. And so We/Us was born.
Our mission is to inspire any and all LGBTQIA+ teens to reach for the sky - and show each other that we can, in fact, get to the sky. By highlighting the accomplishments and stories of amazing trailblazers from the LGBTQIA+ community who continue to pave the way for us, we want to show our community that we can do whatever we set our minds to.
On the last slide of this post you can see a collage of a couple of my favorite LGBTQIA+ trailblazers - people like Freddie Mercury, Martha P Johnson, and Troye Sivan, who have shown the world just what it means to open doors for our community.
Welcome to the project, and I can’t wait to get started!
