Me ignoró. ¡No! Grité mientras echaba a correr a toda velocidad: «¡NO! ¡TITAN, ABAJO!».

""THE BOY WHO ATTACKED THE MAID—THEN BEGGED HER NOT TO LEAVE
Chapter 1 - The Bronze Horse.
The bronze horse left Lucas Brooks's hands before anyone in the marble hallway understood what he was doing.
Natalie saw only a flash of dark metal turning beneath the chandelier light.
Then the statue struck hard against her side and dropped onto the polished floor with a crash that seemed to shake the entire mansion.
Pain climbed beneath her ribs so quickly that her breath vanished.
At the far end of the hallway, Daniel Brooks stopped in the doorway.
For one stunned second, the most feared man in the house looked less like a powerful crime boss and more like a father who had just realized he did not know his own son.
“Lucas, stop.”
His voice was firm, but alarm cut through it.
Lucas did not stop.
The five-year-old's face was wet with tears, yet his small fists were clenched as if he had been fighting for hours.
He rushed at Natalie and kicked once toward her lower leg.
Natalie could have backed away.
She could have shouted.
She could have called for one of the security men who were already moving toward the hallway.
Instead, she lowered herself slowly to her knees.
Her face tightened from the pain, but her voice stayed quiet.
“That hurt.”
Lucas froze.
Nobody in the Brooks mansion spoke to him like that.
Adults either ordered him to stop, bribed him to calm down, or left the room as soon as his anger became difficult.
Natalie pressed one hand against her ribs and the other over her heart.
Lucas kept one fist raised.
His whole body trembled.
Natalie looked at him as if the fist were not the most important thing she could see.
“You must be carrying something very heavy in here.”
She touched her chest.
Lucas's mouth opened, but no sound came out.
The rage in his eyes flickered.
Underneath it was something far more frightening.
Fear.
Natalie saw it immediately.
Daniel saw it too.
He took one step forward.
Lucas je**ed his head toward him and lifted his fist higher.
Daniel stopped.
Natalie did not look away from the boy.
“I’m not going to run from you.”
Lucas blinked.
A tear slid over his cheek.
Natalie opened her arms only slightly, careful not to crowd him.
“And I’m not going to yell.”
The hallway became so quiet that Natalie could hear the soft hum of the chandeliers.
Lucas's fist began to fall.
His fingers slowly opened.
His face twisted, not with anger this time, but with the effort of holding something inside.
Then he crossed the space between them.
He did not walk.
He collapsed into her.
Natalie caught him against her chest and winced from the pain in her ribs.
She did not let go.
Lucas buried his face against the moss-gray fabric of her uniform.
His shoulders shook with muffled sobs.
Daniel remained several feet away.
He had faced judges, rivals, armed men, and rooms full of people who were afraid to say no to him.
Nothing had ever left him as helpless as the sight of his son clinging to a maid he had met only three days earlier.
Lucas tightened both hands around Natalie's uniform.
“Don’t leave me.”
The words were barely audible.
Natalie's expression changed.
She looked over Lucas's head at Daniel.
Daniel's face went pale.
The boy repeated himself.
“Please don’t leave me.”
Natalie smoothed one hand over his hair.
“I’m right here.”
Lucas shook his head against her shoulder.
“No.”
His next words came out broken and terrified.
“They all say that.”
Daniel's eyes dropped to the bronze horse lying on the marble.
Natalie felt Lucas's breathing begin to slow.
But across the hallway, Daniel looked as if something inside him had just cracked open.
A woman in a black dress appeared near the staircase.
Evelyn Hart, the mansion's longtime house manager, stared at the scene with visible disapproval.
Her gaze moved from the broken statue to Natalie holding Lucas.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Mr. Brooks, I’ll call the agency.”
Natalie lifted her head.
Evelyn's voice was cold and efficient.
“We can have her replacement here by morning.”
Lucas stopped breathing for a second.
His hands tightened violently in Natalie's uniform.
Daniel looked at his son.
Then he looked at Natalie.
Evelyn had already turned toward the office phone when Daniel spoke.
“No.”
Evelyn stopped.
Daniel's voice was quieter now.
“No one is calling anybody.”
Lucas lifted his face from Natalie's shoulder.
For the first time since the statue flew across the hallway, hope appeared in his eyes.
Then Evelyn said the one sentence that made it disappear again.
“You said that about the last one too.”
