At FFLNY, we believe no one should grow old alone.

One of the simplest, most powerful ways we show up for older New Yorkers living alone is by celebrating their birthdays. Whether it’s a cake, a candle, a visit, or a call, it’s important for our elder friends to feel the love on their birthday, and know they’re growing old with friends.

This winter, we’ve had the joy of celebrating:

✨ Marguerite’s 85th birthday on January 15
✨ Joyce’s 86th birthday on February 5
✨ Daphne’s 92nd birthday on February 25

Since 2018, our volunteers have made these milestones meaningful with sweet treats, birthday hats, laughs, and beautiful floral arrangements provided by Barbara’s Flowers. And since 2022, our Birthday call volunteers have made sure no birthday week passes without a cheerful “happy birthday!” over the phone.

With your help and generosity, our friends are seen, remembered, and loved on their special day ❤️

This Black History Month, we’re proud to celebrate Ms. Joyce. She is both a recipient and volunteer for Friendships for Life New York, calling FFLNY volunteers on their birthdays to wish them well and show appreciation for their service. She is force of positivity in her community.

In the late 1960s, she served as a Congressional Aide to the late Honorable Shirley Chisholm, advancing daycare, community service, and housing initiatives across New York. She later partnered with local leaders to help develop senior housing and served for years on Community Board 8, shaping local policy that supported families and older adults.

Today, as President of her Tenant Association — she continues to lead by example. Whether she’s giving lectures to fellow seniors, encouraging physical activity, or building community through workshops and social programs, her message is simple: “Activation prevents stagnation.”

This Black History Month, we celebrate Ms. Joyce’s leadership, resilience, and the impact she has made. Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do, Ms. Joyce!

This past cold and sunny Saturday December 20th, we visited with 30 of our elder friends, sharing the joy of the season with carols, flowers, handwritten cards, and more.

With the help of 19 volunteers and 5 drivers, our annual Not Alone at Christmas visits brought warmth and holiday cheer to homebound older adults across NYC. From gift bag assembly earlier in the week to planning Saturday’s visits, many hands helped make this day special.

We’re especially grateful for the Living Faith Community Church youth group for their thoughtful handmade Christmas cards, and to everyone who helped behind the scenes.

As always, thank you to for the beautiful floral arrangements that continue to bring comfort and joy to elderly New Yorkers living alone, especially during the holidays.

Thanks to your support and compassion, we can ensure our elder friends are remembered, cared for, and not alone this Christmas 💚❤️

On this , we’re reflecting on our recent Thanksgiving outreach - our 8th edition was filled with food and friendship, thanks to this wonderful community.

19 volunteers, 5 drivers, and 11 incredible members of Ebenezer Wesleyan Methodist Church Women’s League helped prepare and deliver 23 homemade Thanksgiving meals to our homebound elder friends across NYC.

Some of our elder friends even opened their homes to volunteers who didn’t have plans of their own! Intergenerational friendships like these ease loneliness for older adults and can also give younger neighbors a deeper sense of connection, empathy, and belonging in their own community.

For elderly neighbors who live alone, being remembered and included during the holidays is a powerful reminder that their community still cares.

On this , will you help us keep moments like this going all year long? Your gift supports friendly visits, meal deliveries, phone calls, and celebrations that remind our elders they are seen, heard, and loved - and that no one has to grow old alone.

Our Story

No One Wants to Grow Old Alone. That's why Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly enters the lives of our elderly neighbors suffering from social isolation and in need of companionship. Our desire is to build lifetime friendships with the isolated elders we encounter, remembering and listening to them when it truly matters.

Little Brothers was founded in Paris in 1946 by French nobleman Armand Marquiset. After witnessing the suffering and oppression of the elderly in war-ravaged Europe, Marquiset began delivering hot meals and flowers to his elderly neighbors.

The first US chapter started in Chicago in 1959, followed by Cincinnati in 1997. Little Brothers now serves the elderly in Boston, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and, most recently, New York City.
