Join us as we celebrate AFSA's 4th year anniversary (in person!) on October 28, 2023, from 7-9 PM at Columbia University! Our theme for this year is “Siklab: Reigniting the Power of Community” which aims to celebrate our community of Filipino scientists by highlighting our work and showing how our science connects us to our community and inspires advocacy across the diaspora.
There are so many things to look forward to during the celebration:

1. Dr. Michael Purugganan, Silver Professor at the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology, New York University, will give a keynote speech about his science, community, and journey as a Filipino scientist.

2. Networking! Get to know and connect with your community before and during the program.

3. Show and Tell! Our members will share their science in an interactive presentation.

4. Our executive committee will share our journey as an organization since 2019 and what to look forward to in the future!

5. Food and drinks!

Everyone is welcome to join our anniversary and FAHM celebration! Bring your community with you! 🙂

Filipino Scientists in the U.S. say NEVER FORGET! NEVER AGAIN TO MARTIAL LAW!

NEVER FORGET the atrocities and human rights violations of Marcos Sr. to the Filipino people. Under his dictatorship, he implemented neoliberal policies that continued privatization of social services, lack of industrialization and environmental destruction. He plundered up to $10B from the people’s money and incurred a total of $24.4B of national debt. The martial rule in the country led to 3,257 extrajudicial killings, 35,000 documented tortures, 77 forced disappearances and 70,000 incarcerations.

NEVER AGAIN to Martial Law! as Marcos Jr. seems to follow the same path that his father took. Marcos Jr. neglects the education and research sector with continued budget cuts and deprioritization. He fails to acknowledge what made our scientists leave the country and the neglect experienced by our Filipino scientists from pay delays and lack of opportunities and industries.

In addition, he has continuously approved environmentally destructive projects and programs to serve the interest of foreign powers and big multinational companies. We saw this with the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Arrangement or EDCA which allowed the US to add 4 more US military bases in the Philippines, even though we know that the US military is the number 1 polluter in the world!

A de facto martial law is ongoing under Marcos Jr. Last year, 11 environmental defenders were killed and the Philippines was labeled as the deadliest country in Asia. More recently, youth environmental advocates Jhed Tamano and Jonila Castro bravely exposed in the press conference hosted by NTF-ELCAC that they were abducted by the Philippine Military. Both were known for their opposition to the land reclamation project in Manila Bay which has displaced hundreds of families, destroyed climate-critical habitats and devastated wildlife.

Never Forget! Never Again to Martial Law!
Abolish the NTF-ELCAC!
Pass the Philippine Human Rights Act!
