The idea for this project started as a request from my art clients: to make an anthology of my work; and I have wanted to create a large coffee table book. When Samara passed, I knew I needed to write, and I began to write informally… about Samara, about my grief, about living on. I received feedback from my community that they wanted to read more and that it was helping them with their own grief.

Initially, I planned to create a book that focused on my writings about grief, with art on the side. It’s now been about five years, and this plan is evolving. I’m combining photos of my painting with my writings, both about grief and about the art. I’m seeing a pathway forward, to create a beautiful blend, combining my journey through grief to becoming somewhat whole and living with it, to hearing my voice as an artist, as a person, and as a mother.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

🦋 The Release of the Butterflies
Crafted by Sheri Akelson

This canvas, originally painted by Karen Duke of PDL Designs and titled Daisies and Butterfly, was lovingly stitched and reimagined by Sheri Akelson as The Release of the Butterflies in honor of Samara.

Butterflies symbolize the many transformations we experience in life. They represent transition, growth, celebration, and joy. But most of all, they remind us of the enduring love we hold for those who have touched our hearts.

Today, May 27, is Samara‘s 5th yahrzeit (on the Jewish calendar). I do my best to keep her close and honor her in words and deed. Our 3-year young charity LovingSamara.org has already helped youth in the arts & education. Check us out (link in bio), and give if you are moved to. Thank you to all my family and friends and hers who continue to support us. Your kindness, deep belly laughter, and generosity go a long way to healing ❤️‍🩹 this world and my heart.
