Our is an illustration of a new astrophysical phenomenon, a black hole star.
When the James Webb Space Telescope started sending back images in 2022, never-before-seen little red dots were speckled throughout the sky. There were different theories that they could be massive galaxies or average black holes, but now researchers believe these dots are a completely new celestial object.
Astrophysicist Rohan Naidu and his team studied one particular dot, MoM-BH*-1, and believe it is the beginnings of a black hole surrounded by dense clouds of gas. It has properties of a black hole, but also a star.
Listen to Dr. Naidu explain it all with Flora in our podcast episode "What are the mysterious 'little red dots' in images of space?" https://www.sciencefriday.com/segments/space-little-red-dots/
