SmithSoc Anderson in Partnership with WBC and EMA Welcome Judith Miller and Brian Calle in Debate and Networking Event:

"Fake News and the Future of Journalism"

It is not news that the newspaper industry is in trouble. Subscriptions and advertisement spending are at an all-time low. Digital platforms have achieved massive growth, yet are not infallible when it comes to ethical reporting. The availability of news across print and digital platforms presents a difficult challenge to what defines a Newspaper in the future.

Join the Anderson Adam Smith Society as we host Judy Miller, Author and Pulitzer Prize-Winning Investigative Reporter, and Brian Calle, LA Weekly Co-Owner and Editorial Manager as they examine and debate the future of journalism. The debate will be moderated by Sanjay Sood, UCLA Anderson Marketing Professor. We will explore successes and failures of businesses and individuals in the industry, strategies for success, and popular topics, such as fake news.

See you there!

On February 22-25 the Manhattan Institute and the Center for the Study of Liberty organized a Smith Soc Trek on Entrepreneurship, Prosperity and Culture. This seminar-style retreat took place in Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel in Laguna Beach, California. Discussions were moderated by assistant professor of economics at Hillsdale College in Michigan Christopher Martin and Assistant Director of Programs at the Center for the Study of Liberty Kelly Barber. Between sharing ideas about foundational principles of entrepreneurship and wining and dining at Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel, participants from Stanford, HBS, MIT, Anderson and other schools found time to enjoy the waves and beaches of Laguna Beach.

Stay tuned not to miss applications for subsequent treks.

Peter Grace about his trek to Edinburgh:

The Adam Smith Society trek to Edinburgh was one of the finest academic or professional events I’ve ever had the privilege of attending. Professor Craig Smith from the University of Glasgow led a three-day series discussing and reconciling our society’s namesake’s greatest works, The Wealth of Nations and The Theory of Moral Sentiments.

The attendees from Adam Smith chapters at other MBA programs provided fresh perspective and insight on the works, while staying committed to the Smithian principles and values.

After the daily six hours’ lecture and discussion (which, though it sounds lengthy and exhausting, was in fact some of the most energetic and interesting conversation I’ve witnessed), the Adam Smith Society hosted evening cocktail receptions (including one led by a Scotch Whisky expert from the Highlands) and delicious dinners (one of which was at the Michelin-rated Number One at the Balmoral Hotel, where we stayed).

Because of the generosity of the Liberty Fund and the Manhattan Institute, attendees bore none of the costs of the event, lodging, meals, or travel. I strongly urge all members of the UCLA Adam Smith Society to apply for these treks, which happen several times per academic quarter. I’m happy to discuss the treks and applications in further detail with anyone who is interested.

Anderson SmithSoc Speaker Series welcomes Paul Martino
Today's image of the entrepreneur is largely a few friends in Silicon Valley developing an iPhone App. This is not the image of 10 years ago and will likely be very different 10 years from today. How will entrepreneurship change and what must MBAs do to be prepared for it?

Paul Martino, founder of Bullpen Capital, will join us on campus October 18 to discuss the future of technology entrepreneurship. Drawing from his experiences in venture capital, including early investments in FanDuel and Zynga, Paul has unique insight into the world of tech, entrepreneurship, and finance.

Paul is the founder of four companies including Ahpah Software (a computer security firm acquired by InterTrust); Tribe (one of the world’s first social networks), and Aggregate Knowledge (a big data advertising attribution company acquired in 2014 by Neustar). Paul’s early online gaming innovations in multi-player user experience from almost 20 years ago are the inspiration for several of the modern social gaming offerings. He is the holder of over a dozen core patents covering social networking and big data.

Prior to forming Bullpen, he was an active angel investor and personally invested in the first rounds of Zynga, TubeMogul, and uDemy. Paul founded Bullpen in 2010 and has led several of its key investments including FanDuel, Namely, Ipsy, SpotHero, Classy, and Airmap. Paul holds a BS in Mathematics from Lehigh University and a Masters in Computer Science from Princeton University.
