Two Albanians meet at HHouse! Aaron grew up in Albania and is working at the front desk these days- Merita is visiting family in NYC- when she came down the stairs they recognized each other!
Merita left a Bible in Albanian at HHouse 11 years ago and it is still here in our library!

NYC is full of overachievers- it’s in our DNA to show off, be the best, impress others and do all the things. Every new acquaintance asks “So, what do you do?”as soon as you say your name (Did you know they don’t automatically ask that in other parts of the country? 🤣). The Christian Gospel is good news of rest and assurance, we don’t “do,” for God but rest joyfully on what is “done” by God for us. This is so hard to get deep into our hearts. We invite you to hear Dave on this topic- the law/gospel distinction is essential to living in Gospel rest!

🚨🚨‼️ Last minute show alert! Our friend Luke Sellick offered to perform a house concert for us this Friday and he had us at hello! This trio just performed two shows at the Kennedy Center and this Friday they will be in our parlor! They came together over a shared love for the power of music, the freedom of jazz improvisation, and the presence of the Holy Spirit! They mix jazz standards, spirituals, modern worship music and more - we CAN’T WAIT!

If you’re a Christian, does the phrase “evangelical elite” provoke a reaction in you? Maybe it sounds like an oxymoron. Maybe the idea of a follower of Jesus aspiring to elite status feels wrong somehow, even antithetical to our faith. Aren’t we meant to be countercultural exiles or pilgrims in the “City of Man”? Parlor Talks is BACK!
And we are warming things back up with a topic that comes up a lot at HHouse! We welcome all Christian flavors around here- from Pentecostal to Presbyterian- and there’s a huge opportunity to learn from one another about worship. Jim is someone I trust and look up to, and I know he will bring an encouraging and thought provoking take on the topic to us on Wednesday. Today we highlight one of our employees, Carlos, who has been refurbishing any and everything made of wood all over this building. He is a cabinet maker, woodworker, and skilled in many ways, as well as a kind and gentle human! Here he is in our workshop rebuilding our parlor lectern that was so scuffed and broken it was an embarrassment- and now it looks downright beautiful. We will debut it for Parlor Talks in a week or so! Thank you, Carlos!! (Feel free to get in touch with us if you have a project like this that needs doing- Carlos might be just the guy for the job).

Handy Andy is using this quiet week to repaint the front parlor… it’s been probably 20 years? Who knows! Thanks to one of our guests, Aaron, for helping out! The last photo shows the old and the new so clearly - the new color matches the old beautifully, but the old paint job was definitely getting tired. We gently dab as little paint as possible over the plasterwork because every new layer of paint can blur the details in thr flowers and bows. Color is Marble White by Benjamin Moore. Looks so creamy and clean! A beautiful backdrop for art, coffee, and friends!
