The Battle of Brooklyn Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, cordially invites you to join us for a commemorative ceremony honoring the Prison Ship Martyrs of the American Revolution.

During the struggle for American independence, thousands of American prisoners endured brutal captivity aboard British prison ships in New York Harbor. More than 11,500 men and women are memorialized at the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument, representing some of our nation's first Prisoners of War and an extraordinary story of sacrifice in the cause of American independence.

This commemoration will also recognize the broader story of those who contributed to the American cause—including the vital support of France, Spain, and the Netherlands; the contributions of the Irish and Irish Americans; and the service and sacrifice of free and enslaved Black men and women whose stories form an important part of our Revolutionary history.

Together, these stories remind us that the struggle for American independence crossed national, racial, and cultural boundaries and was sustained by people from many different backgrounds.

The ceremony will include historical tributes, patriotic observances, and a formal wreath-laying at the monument. We are especially honored to welcome President General William Allen Greenly of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution as our distinguished guest.

Hear "La Luchadora" Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez advocate for the importance of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal and for keeping it in maritime use! Many of us said that if redistricting had not happened, if she and Congressman Jerry Nadler had continued to represent Red Hook, the morass of the EDC's misguided process would not have happened. They are both retiring AND are still concerned about this port and will be able to carry on the fight and maybe even have more time to do so! Stay tuned!

It is quite something to see the EDC's Jennifer Sun who talked at and down to people during the "public engagement" process say that "we don't want to pretend at EDC that we're the experts."
AND, if the EDC are not the experts, they should not be planning the Brooklyn Marine Terminal.
NYC needs to again have a City agency for maritime (the last one closed in 1991) so that maritime experts ARE planning and managing NYC's maritime assets.
Also, note that the EDC said at this meeting at the maybe a cold storage facility might not be built at the BMT, it might be at Hunts Point. The BMT Task Force voted on a plan WITH a cold storage facility, and NYS promised the $15MM for cold storage at the start of the process.
WE TOLD PEOPLE THAT EDC PROMISES CANNOT BE TRUSTED and to fight for a ULURP (city planning process that creates a binding agreement) and don't allow a GPP (NYS planning proces that does not create a binding agreement). PortSide has suffered what it means for the EDC to not fulfill promises; trust us.

Thanks to all who made this inspiring Brooklyn Marine Terminal Community Forum happen! It was great to discuss BMT without the rancor of the EDC process. We could feel love, hope, curiousity, empathy in the air. Adelante!

Zohran Kwame Mamdani: we like how you’re fixing problems reported on social media. Here’s one: please resolve PortSide’s real estate saga and bring economic justice to RedHook.

We won an EDC RFP in 2007, and they promised us a permanent home but did not deliver. It’s a long story, but in terms of your focus: the EDC continually creates impediments with the kind of red tape and abusive landlord treatment you want to change.

Recently, the EDC put out an RFEI to do something they have blocked us from doing for years: create a pipeline to marine careers for NYCHA residents from Red Hook and Gowanus.

PortSide should get the space to do this because the EDC promised a permanent PortSide as a community benefit to Red Hook.

Because we are best suited to make this pipeline since we are close to this community and to the working waterfront. We educate K-20 already.

Because the maritime community has offered us curriculum and partnership many times over the years to create this career pipeline. We have partners now.

Because there’s space available where the EDC promised us a permanent home, the Pier 11 shed in Atlantic Basin, next to our historic ship . DutchX moved out.

Because we are award-winning. Innovative. Impactful. Respected. Beloved.

Time to fix this story of economic injustice.

Hey, Red Hook, if you're wondering around wondering about an unusual level of Sunday evening traffic on north Van Brunt Street, it's due to the nor'easter having closed the port yesterday. So, the QM2 stayed over last night, and the Virgin ship arrived much later today than usual and is unloading and loading now.
