While Indigenous Peoples' Day is an opportunity to celebrate the rich traditions, art, and cultures of Indigenous communities, we must also reckon with ugly history of colonization and its legacy in today's world. Today, Indigenous children are 5.8 times more likely to be reported victims of trafficking as compared to white children. A 2022 Amnesty International report revealed over half of American Indian and Alaskan Native women have suffered s*xual abuse— more than twice the national average.

We need laws that recognize the acute vulnerability of Indigenous women and girls and leaders who will work to hold accountable the systems meant to prevent and end this exploitation.

Earlier this morning, New York Governor Kathy Hochul held a press conference announcing that state Attorney General Letitia James will take over as special prosecutor in the Cornell r**e case. Hochul stated that she had lost confidence in the local distract attorney's handling of the case.

Notably, Hochul also expressed her support for Bill S10632/A.101, which would close the voluntary intoxication exclusion in New York law, which makes it difficult for assault survivors to bring charges if they were voluntarily under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the assault.

We applaud the Governor's commitment to listening to survivors and working to remove the roadblocks from securing justice.

📢We urge her to call a special session of the Legislature and pass Bill A.101 now.

☎️ Call Gov. Hochul’s office to express your support for closing the voluntary intoxication loophole TODAY!

The Cornell case not only exemplifies the profound failures of our institutions but it reveals yet again that we live in a world that tells men they are entitled to women's bodies. Understanding the specific ways in which these institutions & systems failed is key to securing justice for survivors and preventing further acts of s*xual violence.

One key failure: a gap in New York law that prevents someone who was willingly intoxicated from pursuing r**e charges against their assailant. A bill addressing this loophole has been sitting in New York's Legislature for 8 years without ever being brought to the Assembly floor for a vote. The bill's sponsors will once again introduce this bill when the legislative session begins in January 2027.

In the meantime, email & call your Assemblymembers to let them know you stand with Jane Doe & support ending New York State's Voluntary Intoxication Exclusion.

Last year, published a report exposing the men who buy s*x across the United States. Habitual s*x buyers often communicate on "hobby boards” - online forums where men who buy commercial s*x anonymously trade “tips,” stories, and their views on women in prostitution.

The language used by the s*x buyers is marked by dehumanization and hate speech, and reflects the blatant misogyny, racism, and pedophilic ideations that are endemic to the s*x trade. The following quotes are taken from two different popular hobby boards.

Part 2 into our summary of the UN's groundbreaking report on prostitution as a form of violence against women and girls worldwide.

"The equal participation of women in society is impossible to achieve when prostitution is normalized and fundamentally based on an inequality between women and men," concludes the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls.

In 2024, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, Reem Alsalem, presented a report to the Human Rights Council detailing how gender-based violence (GBV) is a form, cause, and consequence of prostitution.

In Part One of our overview, we share an overview of the role of the Special Rapporteur, as well as Alsalem’s rationale as to how prostitution is a consequence of GBV.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we will delve into how prostitution exists as both a form and cause of GBV, and the magnitude of this report and it establishing the link between prostitution and GBV on a global scale.

As we celebrate Women’s Equality Day in the U.S. - commemorating the passage of the 19th Amendment - it is important that we look at how discrimination has and continues to negatively impact our world.

New York's s*x trade is a visible (and not-so-visible) reminder that women and girls remain fundamentally unequal in our society. Women and girls continue to be exploited in prostitution, while s*x buyers are often met with impunity and traffickers and pimps go under the radar.

This year's Women’s Equality Day theme is “Leading the Change.” Let's focus on breaking down the structural barriers and inequalities that have resulted from decades of discrimination of marginalized populations. Let's work towards creating a New York - and a world - where all women and girls are free from s*xual exploitation and can live safe, fulfilling, and healthy lives.

Earlier this summer, police raided a rental mansion that had been promoted online as a party and content house called the “OnlyFans House.” In reality, prosecutors say it operated as a production hub for the online s*x trade, where young women were recruited and coerced into making s*xually explicit content for platforms like OnlyFans and Chaturbate. A 21-year-old man was charged with four counts of human trafficking.

Cases like this are why an increasing number of governments are targeting the demand that drives the s*x trade, online and offline. In July 2025, Sweden became the first country to extend an anti-demand approach to online s*x buying, criminalizing payment for s*xual acts performed remotely on platforms like OnlyFans.

The system of prostitution is frequently normalized and overlooked as a form of gender-based violence, especially since it primarily affects the most marginalized populations – Black, Brown, Indigenous women and girls, transwomen, and LGBTQ youth. Addressing vicious cycles of s*xual violence, like the system of prostitution, requires targeting demand.

How can demand reduction programs help end violence against women & other
marginalized groups?

You can learn more about s*x buyer accountability programs & the advocates who lead them in ' report "Buyers Unmasked: Exposing the Men Who Buy S*x & Solutions to End Exploitation."
