As I genuflect on the positives of World Steelpan Day 2024, nostalgia and deep emotion creep in as I recall my State visit to the Vatican, Pan in hand with an embossed T&T Pan jacket. It was electrifying. When we entered the inner chamber of His Holiness’ private office, I presented him with his own two pan sticks and then took out an additional two I had in my pocket. I made a 10-15 seconds ramajay run on the Pan, held by the pan stands that I also presented to the Pope. After my ramajay run, I invited him to play the Pan, demonstrating to him the technique and manner of properly holding the Pan sticks. Pope Francis did so with relish and enthusiasm, smiling and grinning warmly, when he struck the Pan notes and as they registered in his ear, he grinned even more. The Vatican planned a 15 minute courtesy visit that lasted almost one hour.

Today I also reminisce and remember the stellar and impacting contributions of my late dear friend, Ken Professor (Pro) Philmore to the development of Steelpan, globally. At that very same State visit to the Vatican, I was following Ken Philmore’s lead to further internationalize the Steelpan. Pro internationalized Pan in his very own defining, quintessential way. He inspired me to take the Steelpan to a part of Heaven. Pro would often joke “Excellency man, you’re something else, yuh know…..imagine you get Pope Francis to beat Pan in the Vatican” and I would joke and say, “Pro that sounds like a Pan song.”

“It is indeed a remarkable weekend, celebrating the holy empowering and transformative sobriety, calm and solace of Ramadan, the emancipating fervor and ameriolating message of the Baptist faith, the energizing positives and resplendent colors of Phagwa and with Easter, the panacea and reassurance of the risen Christ. During this Easter season, It is not beyond us individually or collectively to draw from this holy dispensation of spiritual celebration and affirmation, to become more peaceful, more loving, more understanding, more serene, more compassionate and caring to each other in a world in dire need of the virtuous, the just, the selfless, the generous, the humane
and people of genuine and great heart. We must not risk becoming occasional, selective or transient messengers of peace, mercy and forgiveness. Even passive reflection and discernment can trigger a perception, even a belief , that bad things are happening to good people and good people in order to survive are beginning to do bad things. We therefore need always to be possessed of a disciple’s tongue and action in eradicating injustice, man’s inhumanity to man and the growing callous indifference to the sanctity of human life.We need as a people to wake up from our slumber to embrace the true eternal message and meaning of Our Living God. Happy and Holy Easter 2024.”

In my view Ms. Rawlston Charles aka Charlie is a living legend. His personal mission have been and still is, is the promotion of Calypso and Soca. He is one I know that have always put his money where his mouth is. So when he sent me this invitation I think a PSA was in place.
