We can choose to turn negative statements into positive ones by saying instead. “You are irreplaceable.” And another saying that we should remind ourselves of when we can’t seem to find something positive to say is “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all!” See what I did there? I could have said that a totally different way! Choose kindness folks. ✨

Our UFT membership, our elected chapter leaders, our fellow unionists who continue to learn more everyday are never the problem. We will not tolerate the witch hunt and accusing of our own people just because they have chosen in their free time to educate, raise important questions and concerns that Mulgrew and Co. would much rather be kept under a rug. We’re here to educate today and always. Do with it what you will.

“Sufficient time” does not equal “a full day”. How does this UFT leadership speak to educators this way, in this instance Mike Sill, and expect them to just eat it. Does this leadership know that we not only know how to read, but we also teach reading? Not to mention. If a principal says “sufficient time” is two hours and last year we had a whole day, do we need to call our math teachers to say how this math ain’t mathin?! I’m sorry to the chapter leaders who have to start the school year figuring this out. Our ship is sinking.

The OLR guidance that protected educators ability to prepare for the arrival of students, and that the UFT and the DOE consult on every school year, is gone. UFT leadership is now gaslighting our very own educators on the ground into believing that they are problem. They are attacking members who have concerns about what is actually in writing. If the sentiment that the words on the page don’t matter to UFT leadership doesn’t scare you. It should. Especially with new contract negotiations around the corner. People who really care about our union and our contract know how important language is in supporting our everyday work. I hope the language gets fixed by next week. We know that principals have been emailed to follow OLR guidance. If Mulgrew and anyone wants to gaslight us into saying this isn’t happening, we have the receipts. We shouldn’t have to do more work than Mulgrew is by being told to email our principals and superintendents. This is a DOE/UFT central issue. UFT central ignored it. The president of our union should get it done. Full stop.

This OLR guidance is negotiated at the start of every school year. Michael Mulgrew made a decision outside of talking to any members about discontinuing the time to set up classrooms on the first two days that our members report to work. Shame on you Michael Mulgrew.
