Terribly sad news from Rikers Island.
Tina Luongo, attorney-in-charge of the Criminal Defense Practice at Legal Aid, says that his death "would have been entirely avoidable if only Governor Andrew Cuomo had directed DOCCS to act decisively from the outset of this epidemic to release incarcerated New Yorkers who were uniquely vulnerable to the virus.”
Michael Tyson, who died Sunday, was awaiting a hearing on parole violation. Inmate advocates said he shouldn’t have been behind bars.
