Staff and interns reflected on the past year’s progress, set new strategic goals, and planned upcoming projects to advance our mission. CANY has released a new interactive dashboard tracking releases from New York State prisons from 2015 to 2026.

Key Data Points:

-Conditional Release Surpasses Parole: Conditional release is now the leading release mechanism, accounting for approximately 43% of releases as of May 2026, compared to about 41% through parole. In 2019, parole accounted for roughly half of all releases.

-Shift in Security-Level Releases: The share of releases from medium-security facilities increased from 64% in 2015 to 69% in 2025, while releases from minimum-security facilities declined from 14% to 11%.

-Growing Share of Releases from Outside NYC: Individuals sentenced in counties outside New York City accounted for 66% of releases as of May 2026, up from 58% in 2015. The share of the custody population from outside NYC has also steadily increased.

-Annual Prison Releases Have Been Cut in Half: Releases declined from 21,570 in 2015 to 10,042 in 2025, a decrease of approximately 50%, reflecting broader declines in the incarcerated population.

CANY is proud to partner with the Food Policy Center at Hunter College in a panel bringing together experts, activists, and formerly incarcerated speakers to discuss New York State's Prison food provision.

Join us as we explore nutritional standards, prison food provision, and access to quality food. Speakers will discuss systemic challenges, lived experiences, and opportunities for change both inside and beyond correctional facilities.

Recently, CANY hosted an Open House at our newly renovated Brooklyn office! We extend our deepest gratitude to New York State Senator Julia Salazar and her team for securing the vital funding that made these renovations possible.

We also want to thank Assemblyman Erik Martin Dilan and Senator Salazar for their incredible leadership in the state budget process and their ongoing commitment to justice reform, including the passage of the Prison Reform Omnibus Bill. During the event, we were honored to present both legislators with plaques to celebrate this milestone.

New Report: Groveland Correctional Facility Post-Visit Briefing

The Correctional Association of New York (CANY) has released a new report following a May 2025 monitoring visit to Groveland Correctional Facility, a medium-security for men in Sonyea, New York. This report highlights positive staff -incarcerated and advanced programing, with concerns around conditions, services, and healthcare.

Key Findings:

-Positive staff individual interactions and lower levels of abuse compared to other medium-security facilities
-Use of body-worn cameras having a positive impact on safety
-Wide range of vocational programming
-Most individuals reported receiving adequate medical care, but concerns remain about delays and communication around treatment
-Concerns around environmental health and safety

CANY recently hosted its monthly segment on On The Count on WBAI 99.5, featuring a conversation with Michelle Daniel Jones—a historian, author, and researcher whose work centers the voices of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people.

In this episode, Michelle shares insights from her book, Who Would Believe a Prisoner? She also discusses her oral history project and her co-produced documentary, Degrees of Freedom, which highlights the leadership of incarcerated women in restoring higher education at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.

We also explored her current work with CANY going through and organize the organization's archives and historical records.

CANY has updated its prison transparency dashboard with the latest data on the incarcerated population and deaths in custody through April 30, 2026.

Key Data Points:

-Number of Mortalities Reaches Six-Year High: According to SCOC data reviewed by CANY, 57 incarcerated individuals have died in state custody between January 2026 to April, the highest number year-to-date since 2020.

-Spike in Deaths at Green Haven: Deaths at Green Haven Correctional Facility sky-rocketed by 171%, rising from seven to 19 deaths.

-Suicides at Bedford Hills: The number of deaths has tripled compared to the first four months of 2025, rising from one to three deaths. Two of these deaths were suicides.

-Homicides in Specialized Units: Three homicides of incarcerated individuals by other incarcerated individuals occurred in a single week in April 2026, including in units meant for therapeutic programming.

CANY collects data on state prisons and publishes it in the form of dashboards and downloadable data sets on its website. By making this data public, policymakers, advocates, and the family and friends of the people living in and working in prisons can gain a better understanding of the circumstance

New Report: Hudson Correctional Facility Post-Visit Briefing

The Correctional Association of New York (CANY) has released a new report following a January 2025 monitoring visit to Hudson Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison for men in Hudson, New York. The report highlights generally positive staff-incarcerated individual relationships alongside ongoing concerns related to programming access, medical care, mental health services, and commissary options.

Key findings:

-Positive staff culture and lower reported levels of verbal, physical, sexual, and racialized abuse compared to similar medium-security facilities
-Limited access to academic, vocational, and industry programming for individuals in general population
-Concerns regarding delayed medical care, medication access, and treatment quality
-Limited availability and infrequent contact with mental health staff
-Desire for a more diverse selection of commissary items

New Report Released: Process Report and Status of the Intensive Monitoring Initiative

The Correctional Association of New York (CANY) has released a new report outlining its new Intensive Monitoring Initiative, a data focused pilot implemented across 6 facilities, including Marcy & Mid-State. This model integrates interviews with incarcerated individuals, engagement with facility staff and leadership, and analysis of key performance indicators to assess conditions and track progress over time.

Key findings:

-System-wide challenges in safety, program access, and timely medical care
-Persistent staffing shortages contributing to operational strain
-Data gaps between official records and lived experience
