Bisbee Bikeways

Bisbee Bikeways Bisbee Bikeways is a project of the 501c3 nonprofit Ecotopia whose mission is to enhance the public health and sustainability of Cochise County.

Bisbee Bikeways strives to create a safe network of shared-use pathways that supports multiple recreation and transportation opportunities, such as walking, bicycling, inline skating and people in wheelchairs. The envisioned shared-use pathways will safely connect all the residents of the Bisbee area, including Naco, to necessary resources and recreation, while increasing the overall health of the

community, and lessening its carbon footprint. Bisbee Bikeways is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all citizens by increasing roadway capacity and user mobility, strengthening the town’s economic vitality, improving the environment by reducing the carbon footprint, and promoting an active, healthy lifestyle. This initiative is inspired by a child and a fundamental goal is to get kids outside and safely moving around on bike and on foot. Core Values:
Sustainability
The strategic plan for the network of shared-use pathways prioritizes the need for balancing environmental, economic, and equity concerns and making realistic decisions for improving infrastructure that can be reasonably undertaken and maintained. Collaboration
Respect the vision and leadership with other like-minded organizations and focus on forming effective, responsible partnerships that provide new opportunities for furthering the interests of the organization’s mission. Responsiveness
Anticipate and respond to the diverse needs of the community and continually seek ways to improve the strategic plan. Guiding Principles:
We believe...
- Non-motorized travel positively transforms our community

- Pedestrian/bicycling travel throughout the community should be safe and accessible to all.

- The creation of shared-use paths benefits all citizens, whether they use shared-use paths or not. Through our work, we pledge to...
-Match our programs and facilities to the needs of our diverse community

-Partner and collaborate with public servants, government agencies, and members of the public to accomplish our shared goals.

-Evaluate and leverage emerging opportunities that will capitalize on and enhance our town’s existing and unique infrastructure.

-Update the organization’s strategic plan annually

-Strive to engage diverse populations, particularly across lines of gender, age, income, race, ethnicity and capability.

-Actively market and promote our organization

-Ensure tangible and measurable progress

-Be strategic with our actions and when appropriate challenge the status quo

Key Objectives:
-Encourage a highly integrated and connected pathways system.

-Ensure that a diverse population has access to the pathways.

-Communicate linkages between the creation of the pathways, individual wellness benefits, community health, and a thriving economy.

-Actively encourage public participation and engagement in the planning initiatives and issues.

-Identify and prioritize the actions needed in each step of the actual construction of the shared use pathway network.

-Formulate evaluation criteria to be used after the completion of each step.

-Seek out and secure outside funding that will be dedicated to covering costs for completing each leg of the network construction

🚨 URGENT COMMUNITY UPDATE 🚨
We need your help to save the Lavender Pit Shared Use Path
This project has been 8 years in the making.
The Lavender Pit Shared Use Path will create a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists through one of the most dangerous corridors in Bisbee — a road with a history of serious injuries and fatalities.
We were on the verge of breaking ground, but now the project is at risk.
Due to rising costs caused by global instability, bids came in over budget. We now face an $800,000 gap and must begin construction by July — or lose $4 million in federal funding permanently.
We have come too far to give up. But we cannot save this project alone.
WHAT’S HAPPENING
Concrete is up 10%
Trucking is up 25–28%
Asphalt costs are rising with oil prices
Contractors are adding buffers for continued increases
WHERE THINGS STAND
Engineers are working to reduce costs, but a funding gap is still possible. Community support is critical right now.
THE DEADLINE
Construction must begin by July or we lose $4 million in funding for the Queen Mine Tour to Lowell segment.
HERE ARE 4 WAYS YOU CAN HELP RIGHT NOW
Speak up to ADOT (May 15, 9:00 AM)
ADOT plans to repave the same road in 2028, duplicating $350,000 in work. Ask them to move Project F0846 from FY28 to FY27.
To speak: submit a request by 8:00 AM May 15 at aztransportationboard.gov
Or contact ADOT:

Ask them to find creative funding solutions now.
Donate or connect us with funders
We need to close an $800,000 gap quickly. Large contributions are especially needed. Any extra funds will support the full 27-mile network.

The more people who know, the better our chances.
WHY THIS MATTERS
This path is a critical link in a 27-mile network connecting Bisbee, Naco, and the region. It will save lives, improve safety, support local businesses, and bring visitors to our community.
We are so close — please help us get this built.
