Black women in the U.S. are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. These death rates are 62% HIGHER in states with restricted abortion access. The overturning of Roe has paved way for horrible and preventable deaths. Amber Thurman and Candi Miller would still be here had Trump not been elected. And they’re not stopping at ending access to abortion—contraception and other freedoms we often take for granted are their next targets. This November, I’m voting to ensure that every woman and birthing person has access to life-saving care.

April Valentine wrote down the future she envisioned and read it aloud each morning.⁠

The 31-year-old Inglewood woman died at Centinela Hospital Medical Center on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Her daughter Aniya was born by emergency cesarean section.⁠
⁠
Valentine’s death underscores a critical shortcoming of the U.S. health care system. Black mothers and babies are more likely to die in childbirth or experience life-threatening complications than white, Latino, or Asian people. In California, Black people die from pregnancy complications at a rate nearly four times higher than the general population.⁠

The family doesn’t yet know the cause of Valentine’s death. Autopsy results are still pending. Valentine’s family said she complained of pain, swelling, and numbness in her legs for hours and that she was denied access to a doula who had long been a part of her birth plan.⁠

How health care workers handle concerns of Black women is a longstanding issue. A 2022 Pew Research survey found 71% of young Black women said they've had at least one negative health care experience. The study found Black women 18-49 were the most likely to report their pain and health concerns were not taken seriously and that they were treated with less respect and received lower quality care than other patients.⁠

Valentine’s family said she sought out a Black woman physician and a doula for her health care, knowing Black women are more likely to experience poor outcomes in their pregnancies.⁠

Top Maternal Mortality Conditions and what to look for! Knowledge is power.

Pregnancy is hard but no one tells you how hard and the same is especially true postpartum.

If you count the prenatal visits a person receives during pregnancy, the count can easily amount to 12 visits. During postpartum, a woman is given O N E visit.
As it stands, the American College of Obstetrics calls for a more comprehensive approach to postpartum care, but women are not getting the care they need. In fact, it's been reported that 40% of women skip the single postpartum visit we qualify for under most insurance guidelines. Can you guess what population is more likely to miss that single postpartum appointment?

Patients under medicare - the same population who report back to work as early as 2-weeks (!) postpartum. It’s no wonder maternal mortality is a problem. This statistic impacts black and brown communities nationwide.

Here are the top three reasons for maternal mortality. If you experience any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to report to your doctor or visit your local urgent care center.

This story is tragic 😔😔 American women die during childbirth at a higher rate than any other other developed country.

Black women in particular are 3x more likely to have a maternal death than white women. Research has shown that as much as 60% of maternal deaths are preventable. So much more needs to be done.

I am thrilled to launch our first of many monthly calls.

This call is an opportunity to convene and connect and create change together. Our work is sacred and it is important to me that you all feel seen and supported.
