Miya Masaoka works at the intersection of sound and resonance, composition, spatialized perception, and social interaction. Her work encompasses notated compositions, objects infused with sound, instrument building, computing wear-able, and sonification of the behavior of plants, brain activity, and insect movement. In 2018, she was named Director of the Sound Art MFA program at Columbia University in the School of the Arts.

Super grateful to start off our 2026 events and at 4tune audio productions!!

An incredibly powerful world premiere „psalm of the sea“ by and with the power house , the Austrian premiere of ‘s auditory and visual pleasure „The light of the Third“ and Annesley Black‘s Opus 1 - „Folds dependent“. We were thrilled to have all of these fantastic composers there with us!!

We were also lucky enough to spend some time in the studio at 4tune audio productions with laying down ‘s devastating „Ashes“. Keep your eyes out for the release in the future!!

We‘ll be back in Vienna on March 3rd at 19:00 performing the complete quartets of .masaoka. Don’t miss it!

On this edition of Living Classical with Tyler Kline: Composer Eleanor Alberga was inspired by a small village in Denmark – a place shaped by a single long road, where movement and memory seem to blur together. In Langvad, that idea becomes music: a piece that unfolds like a procession in real time...

Today is Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to philanthropy and giving back. We’d invite you support Mivos Quartet today as we launch our year-end fundraising campaign.

But first, please enjoy some photos from our latest tour to Huddersfield and Vienna!

As we enter 2026, we as a quartet are beginning a new chapter in our musical adventure.  There are many exciting plans going forward with the new formation taking its stride.  Our job as a new music string quartet is to push the limits of what a string quartet can do, commission and record new works, and seek out up-and-coming composers and artists.  In the next year we will see a re-vamped Kanter String Quartet Composition Prize, a project which embodies these goals. Over the years that the Kanter Prize has existed, we have had the privilege  of receiving 12 outstanding works for string quartet.  The latest winner - Ashes by Ingrid Laubrock - is a powerful work dealing directly with the war happening in Ukraine right now.  We plan to record this piece next year, and will continue to perform it in the upcoming season.  Without initiatives like the Kanter Prize, we would never have come across this incredible work.  In the next year we will also record Sarah Hennies‘ Borrowed Light - a work commissioned by Mivos. Spanning about an hour in length, the piece is a meditation allowing the listener to go deep into themselves.  We know that this is an incredible work to be heard live, but the sensitivity of a recording studio and being able to listen deeply with headphones will give listeners a new experience.

Mivos champions extraordinary new music for string quartet to diverse audiences across the globe.  We collaborate with musicians and composers from different styles.  We promote a sustainable contemporary music ecosystem offering repeat performances of newly commissioned works in our touring season.  We are dedicated to working with young composers and musicians to help them strengthen their craft and creativity.

If you believe in our mission, please consider making a donation today. Mivos is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization registered in New York State.
