Sensitivity Awareness

It has been estimated that anywhere from 3-23 million Americans suffer from what are called “Invisible Disabilities”. Just a few examples includes ADD, depression, autism and PTSD. These disabilities all have something in common; people suffering may not display any outward signs or symptoms.

There are situations where someone with one of these invisible disabilities needs to be handled with a little more sensitivity and compassion. For example, the act of being pulled over by the police is a very stressful time for everyone. An individual suffering from an invisible disorder however may act irrationally when put under such stress. This could be misinterpreted by the acting officer simply because he was unaware of an invisible disability the driver had. A highly functioning person with autism who is pulled over could act erratic, not make eye contact or even not respond to simple commands like “stop”. The officer responding doesn't know of the disabilities of the driver and as you can see that presents and extremely dangerous situation.

We are trying to avoid future situations like that by raising awareness of these particular disabilities. We want to present our symbol as a way for those individuals or their family to show others that they have an invisible disability. They could display this symbol on their car or home window so others, like police or firefighters know someone with an invisible disability is present and needs to be handled with extra sensitivity and compassion.
