On this day, our team Search4TheCure would like to introduce a meaningful story: Sarah’s Story, another one of our honored heroes.
In 2016, Sarah, 35 years old living in Atlanta, began her five years in remission (the disappearance of signs & symptoms of cancer) from non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This was all made possible from a bone marrow stem cell transplant performed by Dr. Civin. “It saved my life,” says Sarah, who at point suffered so much pain she begged her doctors to put her in a coma. Very special thanks to Dr. Civin’s research, Sarah is not only living today, but thriving.
Dr. Civin’s discovery of CD34 – the first and most effective market of hematopoietic (blood forming) stem cells – revolutionized the field of leukemia. His subsequent isolation of CD34+ stem cells enabled new approaches to leukemia treatment, which ultimately leads up to cures for numerous patients. Though the process of Dr. Civin’s CD34+ stem cell transplant was quite a difficult journey, it was worth the effort because in the end, it was effective. “I wasn’t just sitting in a hospital randomly and the drugs happened to work,” said Sarah. “No. There were tons and tons and tons of effort made to create these specific drugs that saved my life.” FUN FACT: Since the discovery of CD34, and in part of it, the relative five year survival rates for all types of leukemia have increased dramatically.
Now, Sarah’s life is moving forward. She is currently a store manager at Bottega Veneta. A message she wants to share is “I want there to be a cure... Research is everything.” However, it does not stop here.
Research is continuously being conducted for the purpose of developing tomorrow’s cure, and for the many patients suffering from cancer. By donating to our campaign, you are contributing to the advancement in the research of blood cancer. You are not only performing a good deed for your community and yourself but saving someone’s live. That someone may be a mother, a father, a daughter, a son, a friend, and so much more.

Today, I will be sharing King's story. He is a leukemia survivor based in Queens Village, NY and an honored hero. You can find his story on ww.lls.org as well. King has a rare combination of a blood cancer called leukemia (high risk) and G6PD which is an incurable, lifelong blood disorder. His treatment plan is 3 1/2 years of daily chemotherapy. He is up to 75 pills per month, and this does not include intravenous or spinal chemo.

Unfortunately, as he gets older, the amount of chemo and medication he has to take will increase. He is three years into treatment, and has experienced several severe complications throughout this time.

Chemotherapy was so toxic it left him unable to walk for months (vincristine toxicity), nerve damage throughout his body (neuropathy), PTSD, brain swelling (leukoencephalopathy), and painful mouth sores. The scariest part of his treatment is that it can cause lifelong side effects, and worse, a secondary kind of cancer.

Regardless of all that he has been through, he does his very best to enjoy each day, stay positive, advocate, and spread awareness about pediatric cancer.

For the month of May, King would like to share a message: "Don't be afraid to go outside to get some sun! Just stay 6 feet apart from others not in your household and if you can't do that because of too many people, then it's not worth the risk! Try another place or try again another day. Social distancing is effective. We know because we have practicing those guidelines since I was diagnosed with leukemia in 2016."

Hi! We lead the team, Search for the Cure, in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2020 Students Of the Year campaign. Students of the Year is a 7-week fundraising competition led by high school students to raise money to support LLS and their cause. We are writing today to ask for your support of our campaign and LLS’s mission to find cures for blood cancers and to assist patients and families as they battle leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease or myeloma.
