New Yorkers deserve real protection NOT temporary half-measures.

Governor Hochul’s move to end some 287(g) and IGSA agreements is a step, but it’s not enough. ICE abuse, retaliation, medical neglect, and deaths in detention have happened under multiple administrations, and they won’t end without permanent action. Our communities should never be used to fuel a detention system that causes harm and tears families apart.

That’s why we’re calling for the passage of the Dignity Not Detention Act and the New York for All Act to permanently end New York’s involvement in ICE detention and stop state and local resources from being used to facilitate cruelty.

Purple, black, and gold advocacy graphic from the New York Dignity Not Detention Coalition. Bold headline reads “TAKE ACTION.” Text invites people to join weekly phone zaps on Tuesdays at 1pm and provides a sign-on link to support the Dignity Not Detention Act. Additional slides state that New Yorkers deserve stronger protections against ICE collaboration, describe past abuses and deaths in ICE detention in New York jails, and argue that temporary limits on 287(g) and IGSA agreements are not enough. The coalition urges Governor Hochul and the legislature to pass the Dignity Not Detention Act and the New York for All Act to permanently end New York’s involvement in ICE detention. Coalition logo and website (nydignitynotdetention.org) appear throughout.

In this moment of fear and sorrow, let’s gather together in solidarity and unity.

Join us on NOVEMBER 21 at 6:00-9:00pm at the Angelika when we screen Borderland: The Line Within, a film revealing the truth of the business of immigration and highlighting the stories of resistance of migrants fighting for liberation.

We’ll also have a panel discussion with the filmmakers and coalition members, and provide folks information and ways to get involved in the fight to end the detention of immigrants — that will become even more urgent under a Trump administration. RSVP at bit.ly/DNDBorderland

The rhetoric coming out of Trump’s MAGA party is disgusting and ridiculous. Unfortunately, this is just the latest in a long pull rightward in a ploy to criminalize immigrants for the sake of winning elections.

Since being elected, Biden has enforced the most restrictive immigration policy of any Democratic president in recent history. And now, Harris’ aims at ratcheting up enforcement at the Southern Border demonstrates a capitulation to a right-wing, fascist agenda that is committed to deadly tactics of mass displacement through deportation and border militarization.

In New York, where there is a stated commitment to welcoming migrants as a Sanctuary State, we see Gov Hochul’s march in lockstep with the centrist approach to immigration. This is in direct opposition to the community members of New York and what will make us safe. It’s time that NY decision makers make positive moves for immigrant communities. Passing legislation like Dignity not Detention can ensure all New Yorkers have access to the safety we deserve.
