🌨️🚨 GROUNDHOG 1 — COLUMBIA COUNTY 0 🚨🌨️

Well… the furry meteorologist with zero credentials was right. Again.

In case you were wondering whether we’d be getting more of that aggressive sky confetti — yes. Yes we are. And once again, we’re outside questioning every life decision that brought us to this climate.

Just when parents were mentally preparing to return their children to school after a week off… just when the snacks were running low and the sibling rivalry tournament reached championship level… Mother Nature said, “Not yet.”

We had just told the mechanics to start swapping out the winter air in our tires too. Rookie mistake.

Deputies are out on patrol, monitoring road conditions, assisting motorists, and watching at least three people insist their vehicle is “great in the snow” right before conducting an unscheduled ditch inspection.

A few reminders:
❄️ Clean off your entire vehicle — not just the driver’s side peephole.
❄️ Give plow trucks space. They are large. They are slow. They are doing their best.
❄️ If you pass five cars in the ditch… that’s not a challenge.

As for the groundhog… we’re considering putting out a BOLO for excessive winter forecasting. Now that the Bald Eagles 🦅 🇺🇸 are done handling Canadian Goose patrol, we may have to redirect resources. I’m pretty sure groundhogs are in season. (Kidding… mostly.)

Drive smart. Slow down. And if you see a small woodland creature holding a press conference — report suspicious activity immediately. 🐾❄️🚔

❤️🚨 VALENTINE’S DAY PSA 🚨❤️

We know what happened.
You said you weren’t going to forget this year… and yet here we are.

Walmart is mobbed, the card aisle looks like a crime scene, the flowers are gone, and the only chocolates left are the ones nobody wanted in the first place. Good job waiting until the last minute. Again.

At this point you’re convincing yourself the gas station counts as thoughtful, or wondering if beef jerky and windshield washer fluid qualifies as a gift combo.

Don’t panic — we’ve got a backup plan.

Pull the Uno reverse this Valentine’s Day and get your ex something instead. If they’ve got an outstanding warrant or owe back child support, give us a call and we’ll help make their day memorable. We’ll make their day special. ❤️

Happy Valentine’s Day from your Columbia County Deputy Sheriff’s Benevolent Association. Stay safe, make good decisions… and maybe set a reminder for next year.

🌬️❄️ Weather Update: Mother Nature Chose Violence Today ❄️🌬️

If you stepped outside this morning and immediately questioned your life choices, you’re not alone. Between the freezing temperatures and the wind trying to relocate anything not tied down, it’s officially the kind of cold that makes your face hurt within seconds.

While some deputies are outside battling the cold, chasing paperwork across parking lots, and pretending the wind isn’t winning every argument, our dodgeball team is safely inside preparing for tonight’s tournament, staying warm and stretching muscles that haven’t been used since last year’s tournament season. Morale remains noticeably higher indoors.

The Dodgeball Tournament is still on at 6:30 PM tonight at the Ichabod Crane Gymnasium. If you’re heading out, dress warm and give yourself extra time getting there. The only thing flying faster than the wind tonight should be dodgeballs.

Deputies will remain out patrolling, checking on residents, and questioning why we live somewhere where the air hurts our face.

And if your trash can makes it three houses down the road today, congratulations — it now belongs to the neighbor.

Stay warm, Columbia County. Spring is only… several emotional breakdowns away.

🚨 WANTED: PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL 🚨

This morning, known menace to society Punxsutawney Phil exited his hole, saw his own shadow (very on-brand), and immediately chose violence by declaring SIX. MORE. WEEKS. OF. WINTER.

Phil is a repeat offender with a long criminal history of false hope, poor forecasts, and seasonal gaslighting.

💰 REWARD OFFERED for his capture, temporary detention, or for anyone willing to convince him it was actually cloudy.
Additional reward if you can locate Spring and return it safely.

If you encounter Phil:
❄️ Do NOT make eye contact
❄️ Do NOT ask about the weather
❄️ Do NOT trust rodents with meteorology degrees

Winter: 2
Everyone else: emotionally unavailable 🥶

Snowy Update: Winter: 1 | Everyone Else: 0 ❄️

It’s still snowing. At this point we’re starting to think the weather is just doing it out of spite. The forecast said “light snow” and Mother Nature heard “season finale.”

We managed to “tactically acquire” this new truck. Rumor has it it was an asset forfeiture from some guy they arrested in Florida (which honestly explains everything — they have the most creative criminals on Earth. Look it up). Just when you think you’ve seen it all… hold my beer and my snow shovel.

Now there’s apparently a debate online about whether this is all AI generated. The audacity. Our Tauntauns were extremely offended, demanded union representation, and are currently on a wellness break in the Walmart parking lot while filing an HR complaint for emotional distress.

Roads are mostly clear… for now. But the single-digit temperatures tonight won’t help, so expect refreezing, black ice, and that fun surprise where everything looks fine right up until it isn’t. If you find yourself upside down in a ditch, just don’t say we didn’t warn you. 😎❄️

Also, we drove down an entire road with no mailboxes left. Phenomenal job. Starting to think bringing this competition to light may have been a bad idea.

Meanwhile, we’re out here testing our new “winter patrol packages,” competing with the plow trucks in a very unofficial snow-clearing championship, and carving out patrol cars like they’re archaeological artifacts from a lost civilization.

And with nowhere else to go, it’s also the perfect time to turn in your significant other for that outstanding warrant they definitely told you wasn’t a big deal. When you can’t stand being around them anymore, remember — our phone lines are open.

❄️ FINAL SNOW UPDATE ❄️

Our deputies have officially switched from cruisers to county-issued Tauntauns. HR approved it (we’re pretty sure). They are warm, loyal, and only tried to eat one deputy. So far.

Roadways are starting to clear up, but there is still a ridiculous amount of snow and plenty of slick spots.

We are now tracking the Great Snow Pile Championship:
🏆 Lowe’s vs Walmart vs ShopRite — Early odds favor Walmart, but Lowe’s is stacking aggressively and ShopRite has strong late-game plow strategy. This is shaping up to be a legendary showdown.

Also, this morning’s first workout was CrossFit: Snow Edition — “Where Did I Park?”, “Is This My Car?”, and “Why Is There Ice Inside My Door?”. If you’re still carving your vehicle out like an archaeological dig, give yourself extra time and a hot coffee.

Friendly reminder:
4-wheel drive does not mean 4-wheel stop.
Just because you’ve been doing a consistent 15 mph world tour for the last 24 hours does not mean today is Fast & Furious: Route 9H. We all know you still can’t drive. Deep down, you know it too.

Also we’re receiving multiple reports that the people with the purple ties are back on the roads and feeling confident.

Bottom line: roads are improving, but still slick. Slow it down, keep your distance, and stay safe. The snow always wins. ❄️

❄️ Snow Update – The Roads Are Still Bad (Yes, Still) ❄️

We’ve officially switched all patrols over to night shift mode and are continuing to test our brand-new winter police packages that arrived just in time for this storm. So far they’re performing well in snow, ice, slush, and whatever that mystery substance is that forms at every intersection. Deputies have officially requested the next upgrade include heated seats, windshield wipers for the headlights, built-in coffee makers, and a “teleport back to the station” button.

We were going to challenge Hudson City Police Department to a donut competition (both eating and drifting) in the old Walmart parking lot at midnight, but it seems they’re still tied up with people parking in the roadway. So the competition has been postponed due to… poor sportsmanship and poor parking. 🍩🚓

While the snow continues to fall, please continue to stay off the roads unless it’s an emergency. Conditions are still rough and we’re currently engaged in an intense, highly competitive game of hide and seek with the plow trucks.

Visibility is limited, traction is questionable, and even our toughest vehicles are occasionally questioning their life choices.

For those of you who wake up and realize your mailbox is suddenly “missing in action,” please wait until Wednesday to report it (that’s when the other shift works 😉). The likely culprit is DOT. While these guys and gals have been out all day keeping roads open, sometimes they like to add a little excitement to the job.

Please send them pictures and videos of your mailboxes flying through the air — they apparently have a scoreboard in the office. The plow truck operator who handles County 31 is currently in first place and may be up for some kind of trophy.

In all seriousness, we know it’s frustrating, but crews are working nonstop and conditions are still dangerous. If you don’t need to be out, don’t be out. Your couch is safer, warmer, and definitely less slippery.

Stay safe, stay warm, and keep the donuts indoors. 🍩❄️

🚨❄️ WINTER STORM LEVEL: FULL SURVIVAL MODE ❄️🚨

While most of the county is inside wearing sweatpants, wrapped in blankets, negotiating with pets about going outside, and pretending the driveway doesn’t exist… our deputies are out here on a heroic quest through blizzard conditions, snow drifts taller than common sense, and visibility so bad even Google Maps has given up.

The wind is disrespectful.
The snow is horizontal.
And your car currently has the traction of a shopping cart with one broken wheel.

Brakes are now more of a strongly worded suggestion.
Turn signals are purely decorative.
And every “just a quick trip” has a 78% chance of turning into a core memory.

So please, unless it’s a true emergency:
👉 Stay home.
👉 Stay off the roads.
👉 Stop convincing yourself your AWD is “basically a snowmobile.” It is not.

Yes, we know you’re bored.
Yes, we know you’re out of milk.
No, this is not the weather to test fate, physics, or your tires from 2014.

If you absolutely must go out, bring:
• snacks
• a blanket
• a phone charger
• and the emotional readiness to meet one of us in a ditch

We’ll keep battling the storm, the elements, and whatever creatures live out here in this mess so you can keep battling your couch, your Netflix queue, and the last slice of pizza. 🍕

Stay safe. Stay warm. Stay inside.
And remember: the snow always wins… eventually.
