General information
In 1959, Otto Frank, Anne’s father, founded our organization as the U.S. national organization in the Anne Frank family of organizations worldwide. The United States was no afterthought to Otto. At age 19, he came to New York to do an apprenticeship at Macy’s, before returning home to Germany. He fell in love with the United States and never forgot his time here. In 2016, our organization, previously known as the Anne Frank Center USA, expanded its name to the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect. The name reflects our dual focus on Anne's life and our newly increased focus on contemporary issues. Through our educational and grassroots organizing programs, we expose and fight hate wherever it exists in our nation. The expanded part of our name, Mutual Respect, comes from Otto Frank himself. He founded our organization to help “build a world based on equal rights and mutual respect.” Otto’s dream was Anne’s dream, and continues as ours.
