Cabarrus County is proposing to eliminate Squad 410, a county operated supplemental fire unit established in 2017 to provide additional staffing and support to local fire departments. The move would result in the layoff of 16 firefighters and is expected to take effect this fall if approved. County officials say the decision is not based on budget cuts or performance issues, but on reducing what they view as duplicated services now that many local departments have increased their own staffing. Firefighters and supporters of the unit argue that Squad 410 plays a critical role in providing countywide manpower for major incidents, simultaneous emergencies, and staffing shortages, and they expressed concern about losing a resource that has become an integral part of the county’s emergency response system.

During the ongoing dispute in Norwich, Connecticut, supporters of the Taftville Volunteer Fire Company protested the city’s efforts to place volunteer fire companies under a unified command structure. During a rally, two supporters chained themselves to fire trucks in a demonstration against the potential suspension of the department, mirroring the earlier suspension of the Yantic Fire Company. City officials criticized the protest, citing concerns that it could have interfered with emergency response capabilities. The conflict stems from disagreements over governance, operational control, and proposed agreements between the city and its volunteer fire companies, leading to legal challenges, public demonstrations, and growing concern about the future of volunteer fire service in the community.

Turns out, firefighters notice when a department offers a great schedule, competitive pay, strong benefits, and quality equipment.

When departments invest in taking care of their people, good things happen. Recruitment gets easier, retention gets stronger, and people line up for the opportunity to be part of it! 👏

Today marks three years since the line of duty death of James Michael Muller from Irmo, SC, a young firefighter driven by a passion to leave the job better than he found it. Like so many others, he was taken too soon. His words in this video continue to resonate. Every shift, we honor his legacy not only by striving to improve the job he loved, but by finding joy in the work, just as he did. Rest easy, Brother!
