As we step into a New Year, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported and walked with us in our mission to preserve, promote, and celebrate Swahili culture.

A New Year represents new opportunities — to learn, to connect, and to pass on our rich heritage to future generations. Through language, art, history, cuisine, and traditions, we continue to tell the story of our people and keep our culture alive in a changing world.

Kikapu is more than just a basket — it is a symbol of Swahili identity, creativity, and everyday life along the East African coast.

For centuries, Swahili communities have used kikapu for carrying food, storing spices, going to the market, preparing weddings, and even during ceremonies.
Every kikapu is handwoven, mostly by women artisans using ukindu (palm leaves), milala, or coconut leaves. The process can take hours or even days, depending on the design.

What makes kikapu special is not only its beauty, but its story:

It represents patience, because weaving requires skill and calmness

It symbolizes community, as the knowledge is passed from generation to generation

It reflects sustainability, made from natural, eco-friendly materials

It shows the Swahili art of weaving, a tradition that has survived for centuries

Today, kikapu remains an important part of Swahili culture — found in homes, markets, weddings, and cultural festivals. It is both a tool and a piece of art.

Today we celebrate one of the most loved dishes along the East African coast — Pilau.
Fragrant, flavorful, and rich in history, Pilau carries the influence of centuries of trade between the Swahili coast and the Middle East, blending spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves with local traditions.

Served during celebrations and family gatherings, Pilau is more than food — it’s a story of togetherness, heritage, and identity.

✨ Fun fact:
In Swahili homes, Pilau often symbolizes hospitality — when guests arrive, a pot of Pilau is always waiting.

Main Ingredients

Rice – 2 cups (preferably long-grain or basmati)

Beef or Chicken – ½ kg (cut into pieces; optional if you prefer vegetarian pilau)

Cooking Oil or Ghee – 4 tablespoons

Onions – 2 large, finely sliced

Garlic – 4 cloves, crushed

Ginger – 1 tablespoon, grated

Tomatoes – 2 medium, chopped

Potatoes – 2 medium, peeled and cut into halves or quarters

Salt – to taste

Water or Broth – about 3 to 4 cups

Swahili Cultural Institute celebrates the new platform by UNESCO, Meta and Hugging Face that can facilitate translation from Swahili to 200 other languages. Our president Kevin Machine, was invited to the Meta offices in New York earlier this week for a fireside chat with Kevin Chan (Director, Meta), Irene Solaiman (VP, Hugging facebook) Yann Lecun (Cheif AI, Meta) and Tawfik Jelassi (ASG UNESCO) on the sidelines of UNGA 79.

Open Source AI is at the cusp of improved global language access. By translating content from one language into hundreds of other less spoken languages and vice versa, the tool showcased can localize a lot of knowledge improving intercultural communication, but more importantly, enabling an easier transfer of knowledge and improving learning outcomes.
