For 25 years, Mostafa has helped generations of kids build confidence, discipline, and community through martial arts at the Y ❤️

What started as a class became a second home, a place where students grow stronger together, on and off the mat. For Mostafa, the Park Slope Armory and Prospect Park Y branches aren’t just where he teaches—the community there is family.

First, they went to Borough Hall; now they've tackled City Hall! On Thursday, May 14, Y youth who participate in our Teens Take the City program took over City Hall's Council Chambers, engaging alongside New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin and Council Member Gale A. Brewer.

Celebrating its 20th year in 2026, Teens Take the City engages Y youth on an 8-month journey of civic engagement. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and community partners, Teens Take the City is available at no cost to participants. At the Northeast Bronx YMCA's Teen Cooking culminating event, young Y chefs took attendees around the world with a stunning nine course meal 🍽️ Their hard work showcased the skills they mastered while learning with Cooking with Shirley's Son for eight weeks.
