Friends of New Troy

Friends of New Troy Friends of New Troy volunteer members run the New Troy Community Center. We are dedicated to "building a community, one neighbor at a time."

The New Troy Community Center is run by the community, for the community, and is supported entirely through memberships, donations, fundraisers, and rentals. It receives no government funding. Stop in and you might join a pickleball game, take a yoga class, bring your pre-schooler to Story Hour, enjoy our monthly "Gather &" events, or visit an artist’s studio. Our grounds provide a popular sleddin

g hill, playground, demonstration rain garden, nature trail, and ever-growing flower garden. Wedding vows are exchanged in our gazebo. Milestone events are celebrated in our Community Room. How did all this come to be? In 2005 a group of residents took a giant leap of faith and organized a fundraiser. The goal was to buy the property formerly occupied by the New Troy School. The town’s sense of community had been lost when the school closed and we wanted it back. The support has been awesome. Our membership swelled as more and more people committed to the vision and worked to make it happen. We’ve held many fundraisers and will hold many more. We’re proud to say, in 2018 we paid off the mortgage. Fundraising will go on because improvements still need to be made, programs and classes still need to be developed, and the building and property still need to be maintained. Today, the center is alive with activity. Neighbors are meeting neighbors. Old friendships are being renewed and new friendships are being formed. If you haven’t joined us yet, come see what you’ve been missing.

Adopt a bed! The community center’s landscaping project is really coming to life now. But like all gardens, these flower beds need to be cared for. Miss Ollie has planted and taken care of the flowers under the sign for years. And her TLC really shows. But our other beds need some love too! Please consider adopting one of them. An hour of your time now and then to pull weeds would make a real difference! To volunteer, please email [email protected] and tell us which bed you want to adopt.

The New Troy Community Center (13372 California Road) will feature the 8th annual Allan Boyd Memorial Strawberry Social from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 12th, in the gazebo garden. This event is a gift to the community and will offer live “big band” music from Down by the Dock, as well as tempting treats such as strawberry shortcake, ice cream, and root beer floats.

Every summer for the past eight years, the Boyd family has gifted this event to the community in memory of their patriarch, Allan Boyd (1925-2017). Allan grew up in New Troy and attended New Troy High School, which once stood on the site of the current New Troy Township Park. As a young man, he owned a garage in the center of town. Later in life, he became Weesaw Township Supervisor and remained a prominent figure in local politics for many years. His reminiscences of the town were featured in the movie “New Troy: The Center of the World."

Want to learn more? Visit our Historical Room on Saturdays from 10 to noon and ask local historian Mike Metz about the life and times of Allan Boyd.

Throughout the year, Friends of New Troy strives to bring programming and experiences to residents of Weesaw Township and our surrounding communities. We thank the Boyd Family for their generous contribution to this effort by underwriting The Strawberry Social in its entirety.

Friends of New Troy is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to building community by offering enriching classes, programs, and experiences for residents of all ages at the New Troy Community Center.
