For the past several months, we've been working toward a dream that is becoming reality. ❤️
Mills on Market isn't just a thrift store—it's a lasting investment in our community. Every purchase made inside our store will help support the mission of Union Mills Community Closet while providing affordable clothing and household goods for local families.
Like many worthwhile projects, our journey hasn't gone exactly as planned.
When we began, the repairs we anticipated were primarily focused on the building's floor. However, as construction progressed and we were able to get further into the building, we discovered additional damage to the walls that wasn't visible during our initial assessment. Those repairs became necessary to make sure we aren't simply opening the building—we're opening a space that is safe, sound, and ready to serve our community for years to come.
Then, earlier this year, our contractor received a cancer diagnosis and was forced to step away from the project. We continue to keep him and his family in our prayers.
Since then, our Board of Directors and family members have stepped in to keep construction moving forward. Their willingness to take on the work has allowed us to continue making progress, but the transition has understandably extended our construction timeline.
Between the additional repairs we discovered and the longer construction period—with continued expenses for insurance, utilities, taxes, and building maintenance—the financial need to bring Mills on Market across the finish line has grown.
Many of you have asked us, "When can we come help?"
We can't wait for that day!
Right now, portions of the building remain an active construction site. For everyone's safety and in accordance with our insurance requirements, work inside the building is currently limited to Board members and immediate family.
But once we reach the point where the building is safe, we absolutely plan to call on our community! There will be painting, cleaning, organizing, stocking, decorating, and plenty of finishing work to do before opening day.
For right now, though, our greatest need isn't more volunteers—it's financial support.
Your gift will help us complete the necessary construction safely, reach the stage where we can welcome our volunteers back inside, and ultimately open the doors of Mills on Market.
