Keys 2 Success Music is the Key. Community is the Success. Long-term, it seeks to improve individual lives and the communities in which those lives are lived.

For legions of disadvantaged children in Newark, New Jersey, the effects of poverty are not confined to material want. They lack access to the broader cultural inheritance and effective network enjoyed by children in more privileged communities. In particular, they lack exposure to classical music training, which serves as a effective vehicle to develop critical social skills and effective network

required to thrive in the wider professional world. This program seeks to enrich the lives of such children - to enable them to "possess everything" -- through music education. The means to that end will be intense, individualized training in the piano, coupled with percussion work to strengthen rhythmic skills and ensemble work to enhance collaborative ability and peer learning skills. The goal of the program is not necessarily to produce world-class musicians, though that may well happen. Rather, the goal is to use music education as a means to personal betterment for children who might otherwise lead lives of not only material but also cultural deprivation.

"I came from an affluent suburb. I felt completely isolated. Keys 2 Success saved me."

Three years ago, I walked into Keys not knowing what I'd find. I discovered something I didn't even know I was missing: real community.

Coming from a competitive school district where isolation felt normal, I never expected to find family in a Newark rec center. But that's exactly what happened.

Ms. Krska's genuine hugs. AJ playing Bach back to me with her own interpretation. Students asking "are you okay?" when someone isn't feeling well. The way we lift each other up when one of us struggles.

For the first time, I understood what it means to truly belong.

Keys taught me that we learn better together than we ever can alone. That people connect so easily when we stop walking alone. That community isn't about where you're from—it's about who shows up for each other.

This is what you've helped build. A place where people of all backgrounds and ages grow together. Where isolation turns into belonging.

These are the faces of Keys 2 Success. 🎹

Not stock photos. Not posed portraits. Ten years of real moments, real children, real families — from church basements and public housing community rooms to concert stages and college campuses.

Some of these faces belong to students who walked in not knowing a single note. Some belong to teenagers who became teachers. Some belong to parents who became believers. Some belong to the volunteers who showed up quietly and never stopped.

Every single one of them changed us.

We've spent 10 years in Newark's neighborhoods — not asking families to come to us, but going to them. And what we found, over and over again, in the most unexpected places, is this:

Potential doesn't have a zip code. 💛

As we close out our 10th anniversary celebrations, we want to say thank you. To every student who trusted us with their time. Every family who opened their door. Every fellow who turned around and became the teacher. Every donor who believed before there was much to believe in.

You are all in these faces.

On Wednesday evening we had the absolute pleasure of celebrating 10 years of Keys 2 Success! During a Night at the Keys Museum, we were able to celebrate the success of our program and all of the staff, volunteers and supporters that work to make that happen.

Thank you so much to everyone who attended, supported and made this night happen! Keys 2 Success truly would not be the same without you!

From a pen-pal drawing during COVID to an engineering internship at IBM Research. 🎹✨

Ten years ago, one of our very first Urban Fellows, Eurydice, was a teenager who couldn't attend after-school programs — she had to stay home to watch her younger cousins. Her family was intermittently unhoused. A teacher told her there was nothing she could do to fix her "issues."

This summer, she'll be an intern at IBM Research.

But here's what we want you to understand: she didn't get there alone.

She got there through a quiet relay — a peer who believed in her out loud, a college student who explained engineering from the ground up on a car ride home from summer camp, a retired engineer who drove across state just to prep her resume and vouch for her personally. And through Keys 2 Success, which gave her a paycheck when her family needed it most, and a place where not knowing something wasn't a character flaw — it was just the starting point.

This is how transformation actually works. Not one heroic mentor. A network of people each contributing what they can, when they can.

And now? She mentors the Urban Fellows coming up behind her.

The ripple keeps going. 🌊

"When we share meals, stories, and music, we discover that we have more than enough to share."

In a divided world, people yearn for authentic connection across barriers. Keys 2 Success uses music to create community where every person's unique gifts are celebrated and genuine relationships heal our fractured society.

Here's what we've learned:

When suburban and urban families connect through music, our hearts see more clearly through contrast. It is good to need one another because then we know we're not alone in this world.

Keys 2 Success brings out each child's song and weaves together melodies to draw people together in love. Giving creates a community where both giver and receiver are transformed, healing isolation and despair.

True community emerges when lives become genuinely intertwined.

Not through programs that keep people separate. Not through charity that maintains distance. But through shared meals, shared stories, shared music. Through recognizing that we all have gifts to offer. Through discovering that connection across all barriers isn't just possible—it's transformative.

This is our why: Keys 2 Success exists because music has the power to heal our divided world. When children from different communities create beauty together, they prove what's possible.

Music is the key. Community is the success.

The skills students gain from learning piano go far beyond playing the right notes at the right time. Through music, they develop discipline, creative expression, perseverance, critical thinking, and a deep sense of community. A student's time at Keys leaves a lasting impact, shaping not just musicians, but confident, thoughtful individuals.
