🎖️ CONGRATULATIONS TO JOSEPH J. KATANCIK — VFW LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD! 🎖️

Tonight, Post 9036 was honored to celebrate a true living legend. At 97 years old, Joseph Katancik was presented with the VFW Department of Idaho's Lifetime Achievement Award — and if you know Joseph, you know he's earned every bit of it.

Joseph joined the U.S. Army Air Corps at just 16 years old in 1945, transitioning into the newly formed U.S. Air Force in 1947. Over 22 years of active duty, he served in the occupation of Japan, spent time in Korea during the Korean War, and served in the Philippines during the Vietnam War era. He helped install the first Minuteman Missile system in Montana and even received a special citation from President Kennedy along the way. His decorations include the WWII Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Airforce Longevity Service Medal, Minuteman Missile Medal, and the Ambassador for Peace Medal from South Korea.

But Joseph's service didn't stop when he took off the uniform. He joined the American Legion in 1958 and has been a member for 68 years. He's a life member of the DAV, and joined our own VFW Post in 2012, where he's proudly served as Post Chaplain. Forty-seven years ago, he set up a food bank right out of his own home, which has since provided assistance to thousands of local community members and veterans. Even at 97, Joseph still shows up — at funerals, at Memorial Day events, at school functions — mentoring the next generation and instilling patriotism in our youth.

As Post 9036 Commander Brian Harris put it: "The dedication that Joseph shows, both within our post as well as within the community, embodies what this organization is all about, and shows the love and pride that Joseph has for his community."

Joseph, thank you for a lifetime of service — to your country, and to all of us. It is an honor to serve beside you. 🇺🇸

We are proud and honored to announce that VFW Post 9036 has been selected as the **2026 National Community Service Post of the Year** for the Department of Idaho!

This award recognizes the top community service post in our entire department (State), based on our impact from July 2025–June 2026 — measured by dollars donated, volunteer hours, and mileage combined. This recognition reflects the incredible dedication of our members and volunteers who show up time and again to serve our community.

As part of this honor, our Post will receive a National Community Service Post street sign and will be featured in an upcoming issue of *VFW Magazine*.

None of this happens without our members, volunteers, and community partners — thank you for making this possible. **No one does more for veterans!** 🇺🇸

We were so blessed to have Cassidy Burlile visit our Kiwanis meeting last week. She is a talented and amazing young woman. She received a $2,000 scholarship from the Voice of Democracy for writing a speech about our Freedom. She shared the speech with us and was inspiring to see her vision of Freedom. She is also the President of FFA and the Vice President of D2 Rodeo Club. Thank you so much Cassidy and family for sharing your time with us!
