History of the Tuscora Stamp Club
In the Summer of 1950, a notice appeared in the Daily Reporter of Dover, that a meeting would be held at Tuscora Park, in New Philadelphia, for the organization of a club for postage stamp collectors. The results of that meeting was the forming of the Tuscora Stamp Club and the election of club officers. Norman Johnson, of New Philadelphia, was the first vice pre
sident. Ray Harrison, of Dover, the first secretary and J. Henry Cope, of New Philadelphia, the first treasurer. In the early days, much of the club meeting time was spent in showing favorites of each other's collections, to one another. In the first year, during National Stamp Week, they had guest speakers C.C. Clairsville and Frank Stultz, of Wheeling, both past presidents of the Ohio Valley Stamp Club. Tuscora Stamp Club's first annual Stamp Exhibition, "Tuscopex" was held on September 29th and 30th in 1962, at the Dover Masonic Temple. A special cachet envelope, honoring the development and progress of Tuscarawas County, was prepared by Jack Carpenter. There were 80 frames, displaying collections prepared by 25 exhibitors from Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. In addition to Tuscarawas County, exhibitors from Piqua, Canton, Cincinnati, and Xenia were represented. It possibly was the most outstanding exhibition the club held. Various themes adopted for exhibitions held in the following years, but it was not possible to hold an exhibition each and every year. Currently the Tuscora Stamp Club has meetings twice a month, the first Wednesday and third Tuesday. Except July and August, when meetings are only held on the third Tuesday. No meetings are held in December, other than an annual Christmas Dinner. Meetings are held at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Philadelphia at 7:00 PM. Members are provided with a club newsletter which describes forthcoming philatelic events and other club related information. A wide variety of programs include Mini-auctions, club picnic, Christmas Dinner, and the club's annual spring exhibition. The club has an open membership policy, oriented toward family participation and new members are always welcome.
