“Remember, that broader push is already happening: Abortion, Every Day reported just last month that Sen. Josh Hawley introduced a bill to ban abortion coverage under ACA plans even in pro-choice states. And there’s a clear appetite for this extremism: among Congressional Republicans, and influential anti-abortion groups that have praised Hawley’s bill for eliminating “state-level workarounds and separate billing schemes.” So much for ‘leaving abortion to the states.’

The fight over what Wyden called a backdoor national ban is already here. Republicans just hate affordable health care so much they’d rather punt this matter until next time than extend ACA tax credits.

Center for Reproductive Rights’ Liz Wagner told us, “This is the same old playbook: if extremists can’t ban abortion outright, they’ll make it impossible to access.’”

Abortion bans were just the beginning.

In the year after Roe v. Wade was overturned, pregnant people were being policed and punished for their pregnancy outcomes more than ever — all because of the enforcement of so-called "fetal personhood" laws.

Pregnant people have been arrested and charged for:
📌 Falling down the stairs
📌 Experiencing intimate partner violence
📌 Failing to get bed rest
📌 Not reporting a birth or a miscarriage
📌 Giving birth at home
📌 Bringing a newborn to the hospital

👉 and more. No one should be punished or jailed for their pregnancy outcomes.

“Some lawmakers have tried to introduce carve-outs to abortion bans for minors but have faced pushback in conservative states. In May 2024, a legislative committee in Louisiana rejected a bill that would have added cases of r**e and in**st as exceptions to Louisiana’s abortion ban. They also rejected an amendment brought by the Democratic state representative Delisha Boyd, which would have narrowed the bill to apply only to minors under the age of 17.”

Since fall of Roe, 14 states have passed near-total abortion bans – most with no exceptions for r**e or in**st survivors
