About Trey McIntyre
One of the most sought-after choreographers and artists working today, Trey McIntyre is the man behind the mission—and the movement—that is Trey McIntyre Project. Using dance and a variety of mediums to explore what it means to be human, McIntyre believes that the process of creating art—from the studio to the stage—is a metaphor for the journey of self-discovery. That explorat

ion and discovery has inspired more than 90 works and high praise for its “singular connection between movement and spirit.” (Los Angeles Times)

McIntyre’s inventive combination of the ballet lexicon, his connection to music, and an unflinching examination of the human condition has resulted in exceptional artistry that has garnered him a number of awards and much acclaim. McIntyre was named a United States Artists Wynn Fellow, he received the Gold Medal of Lifetime Achievement from the National Society of Arts and Letters, he received two choreographic fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and he was the recipient of a Choo-San Goh Award for Choreography. The Los Angeles Times called McIntyre a “bright light, a brainy ballet choreographer whose best works fuse visceral physicality with a deep and true humanism...” Another LA Times writer said, “There is indeed such a thing as genuine 21st century ballet, and it belongs more to this guy from Wichita than any of the over-hyped pretenders from England, France or Russia. Everyone else can just get in line.” The Boston Globe wrote “In a field overflowing with aspiring dance makers, Trey McIntyre continues to stand apart from—and at times far above—the crowd.” The New York Times noted McIntyre as “one of the most singular choreographic minds working in ballet today." Trey McIntyre has served as choreographic associate for Houston Ballet (1989 – 2008) and resident choreographer for Oregon Ballet Theatre, Ballet Memphis, and The Washington Ballet. He has created a canon of works for some of the best ballet companies in the world, including American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Moscow Ballet Theatre, State Ballet of (Republic of) Georgia, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Ballet de Santiago (Chile), The Carlisle Project, Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet Company, Cincinnati Ballet, Philadanco, Sacramento Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, and Smuin Ballet. While he continues to create extraordinary ballets, McIntyre’s far-reaching vision has led to an exploration of other genres of art. He has evolved into a filmmaker, photographer, and writer, establishing himself among the most notable American artists of the 21st century.

Congratulations to Hannah Carter and Lucious Kirst on the world premiere of the adagio from my upcoming new Nutcracker for Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. Really looking forward to the rest of it!

And finally, the icing on the cake, PBT’s The Nutcracker Adagio 2027, which will not be seen in its hometown till December 2027. We are extremely lucky to see its preview. Carter and Kirst thrill with perfection in Trey McIntyre’s gentle choreography. Kristin McLain’s costumes, Carter’s delicate slip in plum bleeding out to white, Kirst in princely white, are simple but effective. Again I am struck by Carter’s high extensions, her long elegant soft arms, safe in her prince’s arms. The audience loves them, as do I. We go out on a high. Devernay-Laurence has worked his magic again.

Ben Stevenson has left the building. If you know who he is, then you probably know that already. We all thought he was a goner back in the 90’s as his health never seemed good. He overindulged: eating, drinking. He was not kind to himself, both in his actions and his words. So the many, many years since have seemed like a bonus. He has lived many lives since then, recreating himself in a kinder environment as a kinder person, though my sense from afar is that he never reconciled the deep rift inside himself.

Well, this year‘s Oscar extravaganza got canceled due to the flu that ate Los Angeles. If you know me, you know this is my favorite holiday so a lot of prep went for naught. We were going to serve Sentilentil Salad, Chloe Chow, and Deviled If I Had Egs I’d Beat You. Also bottles of Sean Peynn.

I can only imagine the excellence our friends were going to bring. Next year will be off the hook.

See if you can guess the puns in these place cards we printed.
