This week, the NAASC New Orleans Chapter proudly celebrates Stephanie Atkins, a Spelman sister whose passion for the arts, community, and cultural preservation continues to make a lasting impact throughout New Orleans and the South. 🎨

A visual artist, former educator in the Orleans Parish School District, and visionary nonprofit leader, Stephanie joined the National Performance Network (NPN) in the months following Hurricane Katrina, when New Orleans was beginning the long journey of recovery.

Her dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to community have guided an extraordinary career of growth and impact. Today, as Director of Southern Programs, Stephanie leads funding initiatives and cultivates opportunities that empower artists and communities of color across New Orleans and the South. She helps ensure that artists not only survive but thrive, preserving culture, amplifying diverse voices, and strengthening communities through the transformative power of the arts.

Stephanie's journey is a powerful reminder that leadership often begins with a willingness to serve. Thank you, Stephanie, for your vision, your service, and your unwavering commitment to creating opportunities that enrich our communities and celebrate the power of creativity.

In a segregated New Orleans, a wealthy heiress who became a nun used her fortune to open a university for the young Black Louisianans that other schools turned away. It became a powerhouse, and it is one of a kind. 🎓

Xavier University of Louisiana, founded in New Orleans in 1925, is the only historically Black and Catholic university in the entire United States. It grew out of the vision of Saint Katharine Drexel, an heiress to a great Philadelphia banking fortune who gave up her wealth to become a nun and devote her life and money to educating Black and Native American students at a time when higher education was almost entirely closed to them.

What that school became is extraordinary. Xavier grew into an academic force far out of proportion to its size. It became nationally famous for one thing in particular, sending an astonishing number of Black students on to become doctors and pharmacists. For years, this small New Orleans university placed more Black graduates into medical school than any other institution in the country, quietly reshaping the face of American medicine.

Generations of Black doctors, pharmacists, scientists, teachers, and leaders across the South and the nation trace their start to Xavier. ⚕️ It has endured segregation, hurricanes, and the flooding of Katrina, and it keeps producing.

One determined woman, one small Catholic university in New Orleans, and a century of opening doors that were slammed shut everywhere else. That is a Louisiana treasure.
