As Sickle Cell Awareness Month comes to a close, we want to give a huge thank you to everyone who participated in Week 5 of the Shining for Cells Challenge! Thank you to all who wore red throughout September to help raise awareness. We also loved connecting with BBMS students and sharing vital Sickle Cell Disease education during our Pop-Up Hydration Station! 🩸❤️

As we continue Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we are honored to wrap up Week 4 of the Shining for Cells Challenge!

We kicked off the week with a phenomenal Men’s Day at Morning Star Baptist Church in Thibodaux. A special thank you to Reverend John Cooks for allowing us to briefly speak to the congregation about Sickle Cell Disease and the healthcare disparities our community faces.

We ended the week with a true servant’s heart by delivering Comfort Care Bags to patients at Manning Children’s Hospital undergoing blood transfusions for Sickle Cell Disease, as well as children receiving chemotherapy.

Hospital visits and treatments can be tough, so we wanted to boost their energy with electrolytes and bring a smile to their faces with fun activities during treatment.

These Comfort Care Bags are given in loving memory of Ashantian Lacey Smith. When Ashantian, our founder, was hospitalized, she loved the entertainment room—and when she wasn't well enough to go, her incredible nurses brought the fun directly to her room. We are honored to keep that spirit of comfort and joy alive for other brave patients.

The Bayou Lafourche Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recognizes Sickle Cell Awareness Month in honor of our Soror Simone Martin and in loving memory of Ashantian Lacey Smith, the late daughter of Soror Sharone Smith-McPherson.

Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder that affects the shape of red blood cells, causing them to become hard and crescent-shaped instead of round and flexible. These cells can block blood flow, leading to severe pain, anemia, infections, and other serious health complications. The disease disproportionately impacts people of African descent.

Let us continue to spread awareness, support families, and advocate for better treatments and a cure. ❤️🩸
