What We Do:
NOYSE meets once a week during the regular school semester for a two hour session in a real music venue. The students are exposed to a diverse set of learning experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Classes emphasize hands-on experience for everything from the fundamentals of recording techniques to building a microphone in class with everyday materials; from music appreciati
on to learning professionalism in the workplace. These classes are not only fun, but give the students a valuable skill set preparing them to enter the professional world. Master Classes:
For the Fall Master’s Program, masters of New Orleans music will be coming to work with the youth and expose them to the art of capturing pure, unadulterated musical sound - such exposure is not possible without an extremely skilled musician. After explaining the instrument at hand, the artist will perform and allow the students to record. The participating masters lined up for this series are: Herlin Riley on drums, Roland Guerin on bass, Davell Crawford on piano, Bill Summers on drums, and Leroy Jones on trumpet. External Activities:
May 2013, NOYSE students run a live sound stage at Bayou Boogaloo, a three-day open-air festival in New Orleans, with youth oriented programming. NOYSE students assist in a live studio recording session at Cafe Istanbul of the New Orleans Brass R***e. The album released on the 13th of June and also sold on tour in Switzerland. Essence Festival Family Day hosts NOYSE to run a community based outdoor stage on the 4th of July while also programming the stage with local youth talent. NOYSE produces sound for other community events throughout the summer. How We Do It:
NOYSE is grant and grassroots driven and has partnered with many business and organizations to unfold a develop into an effective program. Without the support of the local community, NOYSE would not be able to serve New Orleans youth. These community partners are: Café Istanbul, New Orleans Healing Center, Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office, St. Claude Main Street, New Orleans Music Exchange, Bayou Boogaloo, Mardi Gras Zone and Fatoush Cafe Restaurant, Positive Vibrations Foundation, Hope Stone Kids, Berklee City Music Network (Boston), Greater New Orleans Foundation, Sweet Home New Orleans and the Arts Council of New Orleans. Our Future:
NOYSE is expanding to give students more valuable hands-on professional experience in engineering live sound as well as studio recording and music production. We also hope to offer free to low-fee adult programming to teach interested adults ages 18-25 and give them a chance to build an enjoyable and viable career path. The development and refining of the curriculum is of high priority, as such curriculums are very limited which are oriented to youth and young adults. Viability:
New Orleans lists more than 120 events halls, 38 night clubs, and 31 live music venues. There are 38 medium to large scale recording studios and hundreds of small studios. The movie industry is ever growing and sourcing more and more local production. Not to mention Louisiana's 170+ major festivals, featuring good food and local music. No wonder there is a need for quality sound engineers in this city. We plan on certifying our young engineers and giving them a jumpstart into real careers the industry, while learning good business values and practices useful in the pursuit of any career. Community Service:
The NOYSE program is for-hire to serve community and youth group sound needs. We can also provide programming and music groups that are youth oriented or youth run. We offer live recording of your event as well, giving our youth the opportunity to have a full multi-track recording and giving our students valuable and practical hands-on experience while serving our community. The fee goes towards programming as well as paying our best student engineers so they can learn to build career mindedness and self respect.
