NEWS FROM OUR NEIGHBORS AT GREATER TREMÉ CONSORTIUM, INCLUDING AN INVITE TO A MEETING TO DISCUSS GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE & STORM WATER MANAGEMENT TOMORROW EVENING, MARCH 18TH. SEE BELOW.
The Greater Tremé Consortium is excited to move forward with the development of a new flood-mitigation system at N. Claiborne Avenue and Dumaine Street, a project designed to capture and store up to 55,000 gallons of stormwater during heavy rainfall events. This green infrastructure installation will help reduce street flooding along one of the city’s major corridors while demonstrating practical solutions the community can use to better manage stormwater.
This important project is made possible by funding from District 93 State Representative Alonzo Knox, whose support is helping bring this innovative effort to life for the Tremé community.
The Project is on schedule for completion by May 31, 2026.
Our second major improvement on N. Claiborne Avenue is an exciting new community learning space.
The Greater Tremé Consortium was recently awarded funding from the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice to develop an outdoor classroom focused on green infrastructure and stormwater management.
This project will provide a practical educational space where residents, students, and visitors can learn about effective solutions for managing stormwater, reducing flooding, and building greener, healthier neighborhoods.
Together with the bioswale project at N. Claiborne and Dumaine, this initiative marks an important step toward transforming N. Claiborne Avenue into a corridor that showcases real solutions for stormwater management, community education, and environmental resilience in Tremé.

The 823 North Claiborne Avenue Site is a space dedicated to learning, environmental awareness, and community gathering in the heart of Tremé. This project continues our long-standing commitment to environmental education, flood mitigation, and climate resilience in our neighborhood.
In keeping with our 11-year commitment to inform and empower the community, we believe education is the first step. Through our ongoing partnership with Water Wise Gulf South, we offer workshops that share practical knowledge about green infrastructure, managing stormwater where it falls, and simple do-it-yourself flood-prevention projects that residents can implement at their homes, businesses, and places of worship.

🌎 Why This Matters
Tremé is a historic neighborhood with deep cultural roots — and we also face ongoing environmental challenges. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Southeast Louisiana is experiencing increased rainfall intensity and rising temperatures due to climate change. These conditions directly impact low-lying neighborhoods like Tremé. This Outdoor Classroom is one step toward building knowledge, resilience, and long-term solutions — led by the community.
