Dear Senator:
The Greater New Orleans Interfaith Climate Coalition is an organization of people of multiple faiths committed to the care of the earth and its people. We strongly oppose HB 804 and ask for your NO vote. Our reasons are straightforward.
Louisiana and its people are profoundly impacted by the continuing warming of the earth, air and oceans. We are experiencing progressive land loss due to continuing sea level rise, more powerful hurricanes due to an ever-warmer gulf, excessive heat due to rising temperatures, increasing insurance rates due to increased risks, and multiple health problems due to heat and polluted air and water.
HB 804 leaves our people with no means of redress. As such, HB 804 undermines the Constitutional principles of equal protection and access to the courts, a terrible backwards step for our democracy.
Scripture teaches that we are called to be stewards of God’s creation—to care for it, not to allow harm without accountability. This bill risks taking away the ability of communities, especially the most vulnerable, to seek justice when their land, water, and health are damaged. The Bible calls us to ‘speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves’ and to act justly. Limiting access to the courts does the opposite.
Faith also teaches that we are responsible for our actions. When harm is done, there must be accountability. Without it, justice is weakened.
Finally, we have a moral obligation to future generations. The decisions we make today will shape the world our children inherit.
For these reasons, we respectfully urge you to oppose HB 804.
Thank you.
