Join us for The Hereafter, Wake’s inaugural fundraising event celebrating the lives of loved ones who have passed and the importance of meaningful, compassionate deathcare.

An evening of remembrance, reflection, and community, The Hereafter will feature live music, a bubbly bar, signature bites by Bacchanal, a custom cocktail by Mamou Spirits, and memento mori activities.

As a grassroots organization committed to making deathcare accessible to all, Wake invites you to gather with us, honor those we’ve lost, and celebrate the work that helps our community navigate life’s most difficult moments.

Space is intimate, and fewer than 50 tickets are available. Bring a memory, bring a loved one’s spirit, and join us for an evening that celebrates both life and the legacy we leave behind.

Wake joined fellow New Orleans businesses to connect with bankers, explore growth opportunities, and participate in one-on-one matchmaking sessions with lenders. We’re especially excited to share that we won the raffle for a FREE computer!

Pictured here with Propeller’s Capital Access Manager, Sylvester Johnson, celebrating a win that will make a real difference for our clients. This computer will help clients tackle mountains of paperwork, whether we bring it to their homes or they use it when meeting with us at Propeller.

We’re grateful to Propeller for creating opportunities for local businesses to grow and for helping us better serve the people who count on us.

You are invited to participate in a community engagement process to help inform the planning and preservation of Holt Cemetery, hosted by Save Our Cemeteries, a department of the Preservation Resource Center, Wake Education, and Our Mammy’s History & Genealogy. Community input will help identify preservation priorities, maintenance concerns, and opportunities to improve the cemetery while respecting its historical, cultural, and community significance.

Whether you are a descendant, family member, neighbor, preservation advocate, researcher, or someone with an interest in Holt Cemetery, your knowledge and perspective are valuable.

To encourage broad participation, two community meetings will be offered at different dates, times, and locations. Both meetings will cover the same information, so you only need to attend one.

The City of New Orleans’ department of Health and Human Services is hosting a vigil on Overdose Awareness Day on Monday, August 31st from 5 to 9 PM.

This free event will have food provided by La Cocinita, poetry by Jas Rogers and FreeQuency, performance by Amos Distefano and Flowers, memorialization portrait offerings of your deceased loved ones by Sommer Cassidy, and an altar created by Alexius Reign dedicated to all members of the community who have experienced the effects of overdose in their community.

This will be a no photo / video event to keep the privacy of those grieving. There will be a live scene painting to capture the moment by Mara Machete. Please share this flyer far and wide. We hope to see you there.

For many people, chosen family members provide the love, support, and care that sustain us through life's biggest moments. Taking time to document who should be involved in important decisions can help protect those relationships and provide peace of mind for everyone involved.

Calling all New Orleans-area , , , , , ... if you work with people at the end of life, we'd like to meet you! Let's brainstorm how to best connect, support each other, and share resources, skills, and knowledge!

Wake’s monthly Meeting is open to anyone working in end-of-life care in the area, as a volunteer or professionally, and to anyone interested in doing that work. It’s an opportunity to meet each other, to share resources, and to explore how we can support each other in meeting the needs of our community.

This month, we'll be treated to a demonstration by Threshold Choir NOLA, the local sub-chapter of the nonprofit Threshold Choir International.

Come and learn more about music as support at the end of life, and connect with this incredible, free offering you can utilize for your clients, patients, and loved ones.

A note about Propeller: Parking is available and the building entrance is through the glass double doors at the back of the front parking lot. The doors may be locked, but we'll be watching for you and someone will let you in!

This month, we're holding Death Cafe on a SATURDAY to accommodate the folks who generally can't come on Sundays.

A Death Cafe is:
-a respectful and confidential space
-a group-directed discussion of death with no agendas, objectives, or themes.
-meant to normalize the conversation about death, and empower participants to make the most of their (finite) lives.

A Death Cafe is not:
-grief or bereavement counseling
-the best place for those in fresh grief
-a place to promote goods or services

Death Cafe is free and open to the public, so swing by Propeller, 4035 Washington Ave, New Orleans, LA 70125. Parking is available and the building entrance is through the glass double doors at the back of the front parking lot.

The last half hour of Death Cafe includes a legal clinic, where you can learn about and pick up basic advance care planning documents (Living Will, Health Care Power of Attorney, and/or Funeral and Disposition of Remains Directive), and have those forms notarized for free.
