Thank you to everyone who joined us to learn more about the program we love so much! We are so grateful for the opportunity to share our passion for communication and the meaningful work we get to be a part of every day. Challenge accepted!!🪣🧊

We were nominated by LSU New Orleans PA Program for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge! We came together to raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and now we nominate Audiology LSUHSC Graduate NSSLHA at LSU XULA NSSLHA UL Lafayette NSSLHA

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is about more than just dumping buckets of ice water. It’s about raising awareness, supporting individuals living with ALS (pALS) and their families, and advocating for continued research and access to care.

🗣️ Did you know? Speech-language pathologists play an important role in caring for individuals with ALS! As the disease progresses, SLPs help individuals maintain communication and support swallowing through speech and swallowing interventions, voice and message banking, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Our goal is to help individuals continue expressing their wants, needs, thoughts, and personalities while staying connected with those around them.

This challenge was especially meaningful to our students because just last week, our AAC class had the opportunity to hear from Elizabeth Ehrensing and Emily Kornman, who shared their knowledge and experiences related to ALS. We were also fortunate to hear directly from an individual living with ALS who uses AAC!

Additionally, several of our students had the opportunity to participate in AAC evaluations for two individuals living with ALS, gaining valuable hands-on experience!

We are so thankful for these opportunities to learn from professionals and individuals with lived experience. They remind us that communication is so much more than speech and that everyone deserves a voice! 🩵

Learning, connecting, and growing together! 🧸🍂

First-year students in Dr. Lopez’s Language Disorders I course are gaining new perspectives and growing into more well-rounded, compassionate future SLPs through “photovoice” presentations on social determinants of health. Our NSSLHA officers came together for an officer retreat! 💛

Current officers spent time reflecting on what has worked well, sharing new ideas, and discussing ways we can continue to grow and improve our chapter. We also welcomed our incoming 2027 officers, giving them a behind-the-scenes look at each position and the NSSLHA officer board!

We’re so excited for what’s ahead and grateful for the opportunity to learn from one another as we prepare for another great semester! 🫂
