There is an important change to Louisiana’s primary election process that will take effect for the upcoming May 16, 2026 election.

Louisiana is moving from an open primary system to a closed party primary system. Under a closed primary, your party registration will determine which ballot you receive. This means that only voters registered with a recognized political party (Republican or Democrat) will be eligible to vote in that party’s primary election. As a result, we strongly encourage you to review your current voter registration to ensure your party affiliation is accurate and up to date.

If you wish to participate in a party’s primary election, any changes to your registration must be made before the First Party Primary deadline. Taking a few minutes now to verify your registration can help ensure your voice is heard and that you receive the correct ballot on Election Day.

View or update your voter registration:

If you have questions about this process or need assistance, we encourage you to contact our local St. Charles Parish Registrar of Voters Office for additional guidance: (985) 783-5120

Thank you for your continued participation in Louisiana’s elections and for staying engaged in our process.
