OperaCréole

OperaCréole Opera and classical music in New Orleans and around the world have always included the contributions of persons of color.

The Creoles of New Orleans have made contributions to the music and culture of New Orleans. It is their participation in opera, as well as the music of Africa, Spain, and Haiti that contributed to the birth of jazz. This is true for many people of African descent around the world. We are dedicated to educating students, and sharing with the community the contributions of our people to this musical art form.

Shout out to our singers, who did a great job this weekend with two performances of scenes from Scott Joplin's "Treemonisha" for Patrick Mackey's "Ragtime Day." Performances were at The N.O. Jazz Museum and Longue Vue House and Gardens. Thanks to Pat Jolly for the photos.

It's been a busy few days for OperaCreole! Our founder, Givonna Joseph, joined our partner, Patrick Quigley of Opera Lafayette, for an event celebrating Edmond Dédé at the French Library in Boston, featuring filmmaker Marguerite de Bourgoing. And we visited the Archives at Harvard to see the original "Morgiane" manuscript and meet the Archivist Andrea Cawelti.
We were also interviewed by WGBH Media.

Here in New Orleans, our Cofounder, Aria Mason, presented to students with the Cultural Curriculum Project, touring The Presbytere.

Somebody needs to show Timothee Chalamet,
, this crowd! People still do care about opera and classical music! People were lined up against the walls and had to be turned away at the door!
