It's National Volunteer Month and we want to spotlight a few of the incredible volunteers that dedicate their time to our program! Every Monday in April, we will be featuring one of our volunteers. John is part of our New Orleans-based volunteer corps and assists with the daily care of our rehab patients. You can also find him volunteering at the Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium. Thanks John!🌟

POV: You walk up to our outreach table....and learn there are no porpoises in the gulf, just dolphins! 🐬
March is and we want to clear up a common misconception. While dolphins are commonly called porpoises, porpoises are actually a completely separate species that does not exist in our waters. Porpoises are smaller, with spade-shaped teeth and shorter rostrums.

On March 16th, Audubon Aquarium Rescue received a report of a live stranded green sea turtle in Southwest Louisiana by a member of the public. AAR rescued this turtle and admitted it into rehab at Audubon Aquatic Center. This green sea turtle was weak and heavily covered with barnacles, algae, and sediment. Named "Clover" by AAR staff, this turtle was very lucky that they were rescued. 🍀 Clover is still in critical condition with extensive shell wounds but has shown signs of improvement since last week.

29 turtles back into the gulf!🌊 Yesterday, we released 27 Kemp's ridley and 2 green sea turtles in Biloxi, MS. The Kemp's ridleys are part of the group of 35 cold-stunned turtles sent to us from New England Aquarium. All these turtles were named after rocks and minerals. After months of rehabilitation, these rocks are polished and back to shining in the ocean!💎✨ The green sea turtles, Calvin and Martha, were rescued from cold-stunning in Port Fourchon in early February. AAR still has 8 Kemp's ridley sea turtles that need some more time and care in rehab.

AAR has been busy this week responding to stranding reports. 🛻🚨 March is historically one of the busiest months for strandings in Louisiana. Strandings are an important source of data for protected marine species and help researchers understand population health and trends. 📈
How do you report a stranding🐬🐢?

Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, we are canceling the Grand Isle sea turtle release that was scheduled for tomorrow. We know this is disappointing news for everyone. We do not have a new date set yet.

Watch these rocks🪨 get polished into diamonds💎. With 37 sea turtle patients, our staff and volunteers are hard at work. Every few weeks, all our turtles get shell cleanings.🧼 During these cleanings, each turtle is scrubbed with betadine to prevent infection, and examined to make sure any wounds are healing. Each turtle is also weighed frequently to monitor their growth in rehab. 🐢
