The Louisiana Mental Health Awareness Project (LMHAP) was created in 2019 to educate, support and most importantly advocate mental health, substance abuse and su***de prevention awareness in the great State of Louisiana. Mental Health consumer, spokesperson, volunteer and a leading advocate, Mike Thornsbury, wanted to help battle the stigma surrounding mental health, su***de prevention and substance abuse in large and small communities across Louisiana. We want to spotlight the excellent organizations that are providing resources to individuals and the organizations out in front of this very important issue. The stigma of mental health and the availability of resources to all socioeconomic groups is in desperate need of reform. Our mission is to move critical reform forward, start conversations and identify areas of need that need to be addressed with providers, government officials and all those across Louisiana involved battling the stigma surrounding mental illness and/or substance abuse addiction and recovery.
Bringing awareness through education, community relations and efforts to advocate for resources for those suffering is one of the key principles that we were founded on. Equal care across the State. Those that are seeking help should not be discouraged because of the process or lack of education about available resources. Unfortunately, in parts of Louisiana the “good old boy network” still exists to some extent when it comes to care and recovery. They are looking at bottom lines instead of their impact on the health and well being of those they to purport to help. We also want to shine a bright light on the organizations and agencies that are the force of change and success. Opening services up and getting our healthcare providers to be leaders for change; this is going to be paramount to success in the difficult, and sometimes daunting, environment many Louisianans find themselves faced with in a time of need. LMAHP wants to open those doors, expose those that are taking advantage and make sure everyone that is battling, recovering or is a caregiver to someone has the information and access to the care they deserve.
Over the coming months, we will be putting together our plan of attack for 2020 and our goals for the next year, 5 years and beyond. We value any information from those on the front-lines and want to be here to help get information out and lend a voice where it is needed. Please feel free to contact us anytime and about anything. If we can’t directly help, we will get you in touch with someone that can!
Let’s win this battle together and help everyone get equal care and support!
