🌞💛 Summer is the PERFECT Time to Help Local Students! 💛🌞

Looking for a simple way to make a BIG impact in our community? Our Friends Closet is gearing up for summer — and we need your help to keep our shelves stocked for the students who rely on us all year long.

Here are a few fun + meaningful ways to get involved:

❤️ Hosting a summer party? Turn it into a Party with a Purpose! Ask guests to bring one hygiene item — deodorant, toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, or socks. Small items make a huge difference.

❤️ Organize a mini donation drive at your workplace, church, gym, or neighborhood.

❤️ Donate hygiene or basic‑need items directly — every single item goes to a homeless or low‑income student in our community.

❤️ Click the DONATE button — all contributions are 100% tax‑deductible and help us restock urgently needed items.

❤️ Follow Our Friends Closet on Facebook & Instagram to stay updated on needs, wins, and ways to help.

Together, we can make sure students start the next school year with dignity, confidence, and the essentials they deserve. Let’s show them what community looks like. 🌼✨

🎉 25–26 School Year Wrap‑Up 🎉

What. A. Year!
From torrential rain to freezing temps… from emergency requests to Christmas miracles… from clearance‑aisle victories to heart‑melting thank‑you notes… Our Friends Closet showed up for kids across Louisiana every single week.

Here’s a look at what your generosity made possible:

🚗 Deliveries, Deliveries, Deliveries

This year, Tina practically lived in her car — and Wendy survived two of Tina’s vacations (barely). Together, we:

Stocked 57+ schools with hygiene products and snacks

Delivered to schools in St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, and St. Bernard and more

Restocked closets, filled pantries, and answered emergency calls — even in fog, storms, and flood watches

Kids had what they needed because you made sure we had what we needed.

🧦 Socks, Shoes & School Essentials

If there were an award for “Most Requested Item,” socks would win by a landslide. This year we provided:

Socks (so many socks) and underwear

Shoes for students who had none

Uniform pants, shirts, coats, and even 273 pairs of freshly washed pants

Bookbags — including a clearance haul that made our whole week

When a student needed it, we found it.

💛 Emergency Requests That Touched Our Hearts

This year brought some unforgettable moments:

A non‑verbal student who desperately needed dental care — we funded appointments, prescriptions, and helped the family get Medicaid

A student who lost everything in a house fire — we provided an air mattress and gift cards

A 7th grader who needed a wheelchair

A teen who lost her mother and needed help returning home to her support system

Students needing welding clothes — we got it all

A school in dire need of food — we stocked them immediately

Every crisis was met with compassion, speed, and community love.

🎄 Christmas Magic Like Never Before

This year’s Adopt‑A‑Student Christmas Program was our biggest yet:

127 students received gifts

Supported by 67 individuals, 6 businesses, and 2 women’s groups

Ochsner Northshore adopted 41 students

Holiday bunco groups, law firms, and community angels stepped up in huge ways

Santa (and our volunteers) made deliveries right up until Christmas break

And yes — the thank‑you notes made us cry.

🎓 Graduation Gift Program

We celebrated 40 graduating seniors who weren’t expecting a single gift. Because of you, they walked into adulthood knowing their community believes in them.

🤝 Community Partners Who Lifted Us Up

This year we were supported by:

Liberty Self Storage (free storage — lifesavers!)

CompuSoar (website heroes)

Amuse Bouche Supper Club

Padre Pio Fraternity

James Samaritan

Engel & Völkers Slidell/Mandeville

Olde Town Pizza Company

The Pig Charity Organization

St. Tammany Parish Employees

Hollywood Casino’s TITO program

Slidell Rotary Heritage Festival

And so many more.

🎉 The Numbers Tell the Story — But the Hearts Tell It Better

This year, we:

Helped students experiencing homelessness

Provided hygiene products to dozens of schools

Supported counselors and teachers who work miracles daily

Responded to emergencies with compassion and speed

Built Hope Closets

Partnered with businesses, churches, and civic groups

Filled gaps no one else sees

And we did it all with love, laughter, and a trunk full of snacks.

💛 Thank You

To every donor, volunteer, counselor, partner, and friend — you made this year unforgettable. You helped kids feel seen, supported, and cared for. You changed lives. You gave hope.

💙 Celebrating a New Hope Closet at Spring Creek Elementary!
Our Friends Closet, in partnership with Spring Creek Elementary School in Tangipahoa Parish, was so proud to help stock their brand‑new Hope Closet this week.

This dedicated space will make it easier for teachers and counselors to quickly provide students with the clothing, hygiene items, and essentials they need — right when they need them. When schools have immediate access to these resources, it removes barriers, restores dignity, and ensures no child goes without the basics.

We are grateful to the Spring Creek team for recognizing the need and working with us to make this happen. This is what community looks like.

As we plan for the upcoming school year, we would love to partner with additional schools interested in creating a similar closet on their campus.

If your school would like to explore this opportunity, please reach out — we’re ready to help you get started.

To learn more, send us an email at: [email protected]

Together, we can make sure every student has what they need to feel supported, confident, and cared for.

🌸 National Period Poverty Awareness Week 🌸

At Our Friends Closet, we help students every day who are struggling with something no young person should ever have to worry about — access to basic menstrual products.

For homeless and low‑income students, pads and tampons are often out of reach. Many quietly improvise with unsafe alternatives. Some miss school. Others feel embarrassed, isolated, or unsupported during a completely normal part of life.

Period poverty is real in our community, and it affects a student’s dignity, health, and ability to learn.

That’s why we provide free feminine products and hygiene essentials to student who needs them — no questions asked. Because every student deserves to feel clean, confident, and cared for.

💗 How you can help: Your support keeps our shelves stocked and ensures no student goes without.

⚠️ Severe weather warnings? Flood watches? Heavy rain? 🌧️⛈️

None of that stopped us (Tina) and Tracy from Hammond Westside Montessori School! 🙌

While most of us were watching the weather radar, Tina and Tracy were loading up much-needed snacks and hygiene items for her students because caring for kids doesn’t stop when the weather gets bad ❤️

We are so thankful for dedicated school staff like her who go above and beyond for their students every single day, because Monday will be here before we know it (rain or shine)!

Stay safe out there everyone — and thank you, Tracy, for braving the weather for the children we serve! 💙

Tina did it again! 🙌

On one of her regular trips to Sam’s to stock up on snacks for our schools, she stumbled across an incredible clearance… and couldn’t pass it up! 👟

These Reeboks were marked down to just $7.81 each — so of course, she grabbed as many as she could! 💙💚
Thanks to finds like this (and Tina’s sharp eye 👀), we’re already getting a head start on stocking up for the next school year. Every pair means one more student walking into school with confidence and comfort.

A special thank you to Liberty Self Storage for generously providing us with a free storage unit to hold donations like these. Your support helps us make the most of every opportunity and serve even more students in our community ❤️
