I would like to introduce a new member to our UAB/ Birmingham group! Meet Nixon. He is currently in formal training being trained by our wonderful Emily Haigh! He is set to graduate in April/May. Here is a little bit about him! Nixon personality in a nutshell is goofball. His goal in life is to make sure that everyone has as much fun as he does. It doesn’t matter if we are studying, on a walk, training, or sleeping, he always finds a way to make me laugh while simultaneously maintaining as much physical contact as possible. If he could go through an entire training session with his head in my lap, he 100% would. His drive in life comes from pleasing his person, which makes motivation for training very easy. He loves to romp around and play with other dogs, but typically prefers cuddles and belly rubs! @ Birmingham, Alabama

In the past couple of months we have had some major changes with a few of our raisers and their pups.
First we have Big leavey who was being trained by Emily Haigh. Back in December, Leavey was unfortunately career changed. We are rooting for her new future and can not wait to see what she does next!
Next, we have Oasis who is being trained by Nicole Hebert. Nicole got an amazing opportunity to work full time at USVSD’s facility as their neonatal tech! She is still full time raising Oasis, he just lives in Louisiana now! We can hopefully watch him graduate in December!
Lastly, we have Naomi who was being trained by Heather Boaz. Unfortunately, Naomi was career changed last month. She is off to another organization to do diabetic alert work and we are so excited for her!
It is sad to see these pups go, but we know that they are in good hands!

Being able to switch between a heel position (on the left side of a person) to a side position (one the right side of a person) fully verbal is very important! Cora almost has this in the bag! She just needs a few helpers here and there, but she’s come a long way. One day when her person needs to switch positions quickly without luring her she will be just the right dog for the job 😁

When raising a dog, our puppy raisers don’t always know what kind of disabilities their dogs future veteran will have. We prepare dogs to help with hearing, ptsd, mobility, etc. Because there is such a wide variety, our puppy raisers like to expose their dogs to anything and everything! Here we have O’Stan experiencing walking along side a wheelchair for the first time. He showed no fears and seems very confident around it! This could be a good asset for O’Stan in the future when being placed with a veteran. Way to go!

Our puppy raisers have an unbreakable bond with their first dog that they raise. Yes, it may be sad when it’s time for them to leave, but it’s for the best reason!

What a year 2019 was for our club! We started off the year with our group of future graduates. At the start of the year Oakley, Octavia, Sarafina, Abe, Triton, Nala, and Sebastian were just a few months away from going to formal training and meeting their forever person. In August, the day finally came when the largest group of dogs from UAB graduated and helped veterans find their new normal. After graduation we had a new set of 10 amazing raisers. 6 of the 10 raisers are experiencing their first time raising EVER. So far, everyone has been doing wonderfully and the dogs are growing up so fast! In 2 months almost all of them will be a year old! That’s so crazy to think. We are so excited for the new year and can’t wait to hopefully see all our pups graduate!
