If you live in New Orleans please make sure to vote for this initiative in November, which will provide local funds for affordable housing without increasing your taxes.

There's a push to allocate millions of dollars into a trust fund that could address affordable housing in New Orleans. If passed, a percentage of the city's general fund budget would permanently be set aside for housing programs.

Living in poverty is awful; even worse when you are in your "golden years" and struggling with rent, food, medicine, etc. It's why we want to create affordable housing for LGBTQ+ seniors that enable them to also pay for expenses beyond housing and truly live happily in their golden years.

To continue the introduction of our board, a stranger to no one involved in our New Orleans community.

Jim Meadows has served as the executive director of New Orleans Advocates for LGBTQ+ Elders (NOAGE) since 2016. He earned his MSW from Tulane School of Social Work in 2007, and has worked extensively with older adults in a variety of healthcare and nonprofit settings. He is a member of the board of directors for several organizations, including the Tulane School of Social Work Alumni Association, the LGBT+ Archives Project of Louisiana, New Orleans Steamboat Club, and A Home Among Friends.

As we enter another cold weekend please keep in mind the ongoing, unresolved issue of LGBTQ+ senior housing. We, the community, can solve this problem if we work together. Best estimates are 1000 members of our senior community right here in New Orleans need affordable housing. Neither Mardi Gras nor Jazz Fest nor Essence Fest celebrations make this number any smaller
