Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, an international collegiate and non-profit community service organization founded in 1922, stands firmly opposed to any proposals to dismantle or close the United States Department of Education. As an organization founded by educators and built on the principles of education and โGreater Service, Greater Progress,โ we view such proposals as a direct threat to educational equity, access, quality, and the future of our nationโs youth.
The U.S. Department of Education serves as a critical institution that ensures equal access to education for all Americans regardless of race, income, or background, administers federal financial aid programs that enable millions of students to pursue higher education, enforces civil rights laws in educational settings, provides essential resources and support for underserved schools and communities, and ollects and disseminates vital research and data to improve educational outcomes nationwide.
The elimination of this department would disproportionately impact the very communities Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated has served for generationsโhistorically marginalized populations who rely on federal oversight and resources to ensure educational equity. Without these protections, we risk returning to an era where quality education is a privilege for the few rather than a right for all.
As an organization founded by seven courageous educators during a time of significant racial inequality, we understand the historical significance of federal protection for educational rights. The progress made in educational equity over the past century cannot be compromised.
We implore you to contact your Senators and Congress Members expressing opposition to any legislation aimed at eliminating the Department of Education.
