For the past 26 days, Algiers Proud has been distributing food, water and supplies at the Boyd Manor senior housing facility in Algiers - and also advocating against the widespread elder abuse & neglect that our volunteers became aware of at the building post .
Following the storm, elderly residents were abandoned by TALIAFARO Inc. the management company of Boyd Manor. We heard of their plight the day after Ida hit New Orleans, and upon arrival, uncovered years worth of neglect within the facility that residents were forced to live in - including black mold, mildew, crumbling sheetrock, holes in the facility's roof and walls, pests, and a myriad of other issues.
Through conversations with the seniors who live there, we also learned about financial exploitation at the hands of management, intimidation, and other potentially nefarious happenings that have all fueled our activism & organizing.
As of Friday, September 24th, Louisiana Governor John Bell Edwards and Governor's Office of Elderly Affairs have taken our claims & demands seriously - and have opened an abuse investigation against the buildings management & ownership. We're encouraged about the investigation, and continue to remain vigilant in advocating for the immediate relocation of these seniors, and legal action against all involved parties who have inflicted abuses onto the residents.
Thank you Governor John Bel Edwards for taking action, and we appreciate every community member, volunteer, and advocate for helping us get this far! The elders at Boyd Manor express their gratitude daily for those who would not let them be forgotten. Thank you all for making Algiers proud. ⚜️❤️
WDSU Investigates reported earlier this months that residents there said the property manager was unresponsive while they waited 11 days after Hurricane Ida for power to be restored.
